Note: The following is copied from "History of York County, Pennsylvania" by Geo rge Prowell, 1907, p. 812-813. I understand that one paid for inclusi on in this book and the biographies are not necessarily accurate. "WILLIAM N. KLINE, senior member of the well-known contracting and buildi ng firm of Kline and Flohr of York, Pa., and a very highly esteemed citiz en of that city, was born in Lancaster county, Pa., December 11, 1836, s on of Michael Kline. Michael Kline in his early manhood followed farming. He later took up t eaming as an occupation, and then found employment tending the locks ne ar Middletown, on the Susquehanna river. He died aged eighty years, and w as buried at Highspire, Dauphin county. He was three times married, but h is first wife's name is not known. His second wife was Mary Nauman, who b acame the mother of our subject and of Frederick. Mr. Kline's third wi fe was a Mrs. Simmons, and they had a of family of nine children, all n ow deceased as far as known. William N. Kline is a self-made man. He was bound out at the age of sev en years to Samuel Nisley, and he remained with him until fourteen yea rs of age, receiving but a few weeks schooling each year. When a lad of s ixteen years, he had a fall, in a stibble field, injuring his hearing. Wh en nineteen years old he went to the wagon making trade in Lancaster count y, with John Moyer, and at that he continued for three years, after whi ch he was employed at the Mount Joy car shops, at carpentering, and the re remained seven years. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Kline wish ed to enlist, but his defective hearing prevented this, although he serv ed in the quartermaster department at Washington, and was at one time call ed on to select a gang of fifty men to take to Tennessee to construct brid ges. He was employed at this for two years, often being between the fight ing lines of the two armies. After the war Mr. Kline located at Harrisbur g, and was employed at the car shops, holding the office of assistant fore man, later becoming foreman. One year later he resigned this positi on to go to Erie with the Pennsylvania & Erie railroad as a mechanic, a nd while in their employ built the fine office at Erie. He then return ed to Harrisburg and engaged in carpentering and contracting, later removi ng to New Cumberland, Cumberland county, where he resided twenty year s. It has often been said that while in Cumberland county, Mr. Kline bui lt every other house erected there. In 1897 he came to York, whe re he is now engaged in business with J. W. Flohr the firm being kno wn as Kline & Flohr. They are doing a very large and profitable busines s, and at present are engaged in erecting an annex to the First Evangelic al Church at the east end of York. Mr. Kline married Miss Catherine Kauffman, daughter of Christian Kauffman n, a United Brethren clergyman for thirty years near Annville, Lebanon cou nty, and to this union have been born two children: Annie Mary, who marri ed John Seider, and lives with her parents; and Horace C., who is in the r eal estate business at Altoona. Mr. Kline is a Republican in politics, and in New Cumberland, Cumberla nd county, served as notary public eight years, as justice of the peace fi ve years, and as chief burgess two years. He is a staunch Union man, a nd is greatly interested in the rights of all Union men, running for may or on the Union ticket of 1905. While in New Cumberland he erected the Un ited Brethren Church, and was very active in the church and Sunday school. " Eugene Throop checked Prospect Hill Cemetery and the York Court House f or a record of his death and found none. He thinks he moved out of Yo rk in his old age. However, he is in the 1910 census at age 73 in the hou sehold of his daughter Annie M. Seiders in York, PA. In the 1850 census there is a William Klein in Raphoe Twp., Lancaster Co ., PA, p. 372, in the HH of Samuel Shelly 39, farmer. This is probably o ur man. In 1870 he is in the 6th ward of Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., P A, p. 290, age 34 laboring, with Kater 33, Anna 10, Minerva 8, Willi am 1. In 1880 he is in Shiremanstown, Cumberland Co., PA, p. 69C, 43, a l ife insurance agent. With him are Katie 46, Annie 18 teacher, Horace 9. The following is the evidence bearing on the identity of the mother of Wil liam N. Kline: 1) William N.(for Nauman?) Kline wrote in the History of York County th at his mother was the second wife of Michael Kline, Mary Nauman. 2) The printed record of Michael Kline's 2-14-1836 marriage in Christ E v. Lutheran Ch., Elizabethtown, gives his bride as Maria Lawman, and the o riginal hand written record show her as Maria Lauman. 3) In the 1840 census, Rapho Twp., Michael Kline is 40-50 and has with h im a boy 0-5 (son Frederick), boy 5-10 (son William N.), woman 20-30 (daug hter by first wife??), woman 50-60 (wife). 4) FTM CD 196 (SE PA Births) shows Anna Maria Nauman born 12-25-1789 to F redrick and Elizabeth Rhule Nauman, a date which fits the age in the cens us above. Another Anna Maria Nauman was born to Benjamin Nauman's son Joh n, but her age does not fit the census and she married and is buried wi th another man, Henry Shaffner. 5) William N. Nauman wrote in the History of York County that at age sev en (his age at the death of his mother?) he was bound out to Samuel Nisel y. The estate papers of Fredrich Nauman who died in 1818 show that his la nd adjoined that of Samuel Neisley. 6) The second child of Michael and Mary Nauman was named Fredrick, like A nna Maria's father. 7) The first child of William N. Kline was named Annie Mary, my grandmoth er. 8) The 1818 estate papers of Fredrick Nauman do not mention a daughter An na Maria nor does an inventory of his estate, both of which name all of h is other living children. 9) In the 1850 census of Rapho Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, Fredrick Kline, M ichael's brother, is in the household of Abraham Shelly. Abraham's siste r, Anna or Nancy, was married to Samuel Nauman, the brother of Anna Mar ia Nauman. 10) In Lancaster Co. Orphens court records of November 18449(?) it read s: "Fredrick Nauman, dec'd. On the Petition of Michael Klein the fath er and next friend of Fredrick and William Klein minor children of Mary Kl ein, deceased, under the age of fourteen years and grand children of Fredr ick Nauman, deceased; and praying the Court to appoint guardians over t he persons and estatates of the said minors. Whereupon the Court appoi nt Samuel Nauman guardian over the person and estate of the said William K lein minor aforesaid and also appoint Mary Shoemaker guardian over the per son and estate of the said Frederick Klein minor aforesaid." Four peop le were "bound" in the sum of $500: Samuel Nauman and Charles Fry, Mary S humaker and Abraham Shelly. "10" pretty much tells the story. It was hard to find and a long time com ing.
