My father was born in Stuart, Warre n Co., Iowa. He took a "Donation Land Claim" of 320 acres in Curry Co., Oregon. They left her e because the schools were only open 3 months of the year. He went to Oregon with his widowed mother, Mary Jane Willis Carey, in 1872. His brother, Wil liam settled in Nebraska but went to Oregon in 1883 and homesteaded. His brother Elias left a nd went to Baker, Oregon. His brother Elwood "squatted' on "School Land." He died in Californ ia. -taken from a letter from Lottie Carey Belshaw Nov. 19, 1966 to Dorothy Carey Toennies -"Br anches" Lottie Carey Belshaw [died 1976] took the second examination given for registered nurses i n California. Several of her sisters were nurses. Lottie said that her family were part of th e folks who made the west--opened the roads and paved the way for the folks who are there now . When her father took the Donation Land Claim, he bought out his uncle Nathan Cook and his w ife Almeda Carey Cook. Her mother was a grade school teacher and helped with lessons at home. Lottie said there used to be about 50 Careys there [Curry Co.], and that our Careys have alw ays been Quakers. "Papa used to talk to me about it." -"Branches" "David Carey was one of the founders of the Gold Beach Masonic Lodge in Curry Co., Oregon i n 1900. He sold out and moved to Coos County where he became a logger. His sons all took home steads but gradually moved to other parts of Oregon." -"Plumstead"
