Note: Mamie, John, Fred & Alvie were in and out of "The House of Refuge". The first notes were found at the Recorder of Deeds office in St. Louis, MO. 8/28/1907 - "Mrs. Mary Zeitz of 4241 N. Broadway, applied for the commitment for maintenance of her four children, Mamie, John, Fred and Alva, aged respectively 12,11,7 and 4 years. Mrs Seitz stated that she was deserted by her husband sixteen months ago and is now employed at housework and has no one to assist her in the care of the children. She also stated that a warrant has been sworn out against her husband. Her application was granted on condition that she follow up with prosecution of her husband for wife and child abandonment. 9/25/1907 - Mrs. Mary Zeitz of 4241 N. Broadway applied for the release of her four children, Mamie, John, Fred and Alva, aged respectively 12, 11, 7 and 4 years, committed for maintenance on Sept. 11, 1907. - Having recovered her health she states that she can provide a home for the children. The children were ordered released. 10/9/1907 - Superintendent Richardson then stated that Mamie, John, Fred and Alva, aged respectively 12, 11, 7 and 4 years, children of Mrs. Mary Zeitz of 4141 N. Broadway, who were discharged on September 25th, 1907, by action of the Board, were temporarily received by him on October 3, 1907, on account of Mrs. Zeitz not being able to care for them. She took them out on the 25th of September with the understanding that her father would help her take care of them, but after the children were brought to his home, he declined to assist her. The Superintendent's action was approved. 3/25/1908 - Mamie, John, Fred and Alva, aged respectively 12, 10 ,7 and 4 years, were released to their mother, Mrs. Mamie Zeitz of 4241 N. Broadway. Mrs. Zeitz claims she can now care for her children. 4/22/1908 - By permission of Mr. Ruthledge, subject to the approval of the Board, Mamie, John, Fred and Alva aged respectively 12, 10 ,7 and 4 years, children of Mrs. Mamie Zeitz, 4141 N. Broadway, were recommitted to the school. Mrs. Zeitz had these children released to her on March 25th with the understanding that she could properly care for them. she afterward found out that she was unable to do so.
