Notes
a. Note:   Pauline early evidenced exceptional musical talent. At the of eleven she was singing in the Episcopal Church choir and by 1874, at the age of fourteen, was performing in operas. Recognizing her talent, Professor Frieze of the University of Michigan, on 24 November 1876 organized a benefit concert at the G.D. Hill Opera House, now the Whitney theater. The best musicians of the city volunteered their services and Pasuline herself sang an aria from Gounod's Faust and The Wanderer by Schubert. Proceeds from this appearance enabled her to attend the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, where she became a pupil of Oscar Saenger of New York, at the time a famous instructor and voice coach. An accomplished contralto, Pauline not only used her talents and education in operas and concerts, especially together with her husband, but also in the lifelong occupation of instructing children.
