Note: Leni studied modern languages and physical education in Berlin and Cologne, and spent a year as an exchange student at Smith's College, Northampton, MA On returning to Ger. she obtained a teacher's certificate and a doctorate in philosophy, her dissertation being Neuengland in der erz�hlenden Literatur Amerikas ["New England in the Narrative Literature of America"]. The present writer can attest to the fact that her written English was flawless, as was also her Danish! She was secretary of the Karl-Schurz-Society in Berlin, and later worked for the foreign service in London and Co-penhagen. During World War II Leni worked at the embassy in Copenhagen in an official advisory capacity. When Den. was liberated in May 1945, the Danes arrested her along with the rest of the embassy's personnel and turned them over to the English. Leni remained in prison for an entire year. After returning to Ger., she obtained a position with the Civil Aviation Department of the Federal Ministry of Transport, attending several international civil aviation conferences in this context. She retired from civil service in 1972, at which time she held an executive position (Regierungs-Direktor).
