Notes
a. Note:   Johannes was initially proprietor of the "Lamb." In 1727 he founded the Post, a tall, gabled house on Market Square in Blaubeuren (see Introduction, p. 2). The management of the Hirsch, the inn that developed in conjunction with the Post, and the mail for both town and countryside constituted a business that demanded circumspection and energy on the part of the host and hostess. It was the inn that made the business viable, as the compensation offered for handling the mail was negligible. Johannes was also town mayor from 1765 to 1792. His entry in the death register reads: "On the 4th October 1792, at 4 o'clock in the morning, Herr Johannes Widenmann, highly esteemed mayor of this city [Blaubeuren] for many years, died after a brief illness in his 98th year less 26 days. [He] had never been ill throughout his lifetime, and even at an advanced age remained ever sound in body and mind. [He] was buried the 5th October at 4 o'clock in the evening, attended by his son [no. 33], innkeeper at the Hirsch and judiciary here, some close relatives, the joint high bailiffs, and all the magistrates. Herr Moser, the local tutor, held an appropriate funeral oration by his grave."
