Note: Katharine attended elementary and high school in her hometown, and in 1927 graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a major in history. She later took postgraduate courses at Pennsylvania State College and Mi-ami University, and for many years was a docent at Washington Cathedral. Katharine accompanied her husband to various posts in the US and overseas, including Morocco. During World War II she served in the Special Women's Naval Auxiliary Service as a civilian volunteer occupied with crypt-analysis.
