Note: e young females in John's family; one age 16-26 which must be Elizabeth, and two under 10, apparently Martha and Maria. Although listed after her brother Emmanuel in the division of her father's estate, Maria must have been born a year earlier, as Emmanuel is not yet represented in the 1800 census. (place) Cumberland Co., Pa. tax assessments, 1793-1805, LDS film #21092. John Apley appears as a resident of Allen Twp. for the year 1799. His mother Sophia was living in that township in 1799 when she purchased her land in Fairview Twp., York Co. (York Co., Pa. Deed Book, 2-Q-159). !MARRIAGE: York Co., Pa Deed Book, 3-K-305, lists Emmanuel Lowman as the only child and heir of Maria Eppley, deceased. Her husband's name is not given, but the following entry is found in the 1820 census: Fairview Twp., York Co., Pa., p. 73, Alexr. Loman, one male 16-26, one male under 10, one female 16-26. This Alexander was a weaver, the trade followed by three of Maria's brothers. !DEATH: Deceased by the time of the apportionment of her father's estate (1827), and living in 1820, when she appears on the 1820 census (see above). According to the George A.D. Lomman account, she died in 1819, when Emanuel was 3 days old, but that cannot be true as she is on the 1820 census. It is likely she died in 1820/21. !NOTE: From the personal history of George A.D. Lomman, 14 May 1877, discovered in Mechanicburg in 1976, and now in possession of Shirley Caldwell Grey, Kettering, Ohio: "My grandfather on my father's side was born while crossing the ocean at what year he landed for America I am not able to say. His name was Alexandra Lomman. He grew to be a man and learned to manufacture glass and look for himself a wife by the name of Miss Epply of German descent. After marriage but a short time, he went in search of employ. He first went to Pittsburgh and he stayed. Further west and was drown in the Ohio River." "My father, Emanuel Lomman, was not yet born, and his mother died when he was 3 days old, which was in 1819. He was raised by his uncle, Mr. Epply in York County, Pa. Near New Cumberland. He came to Mechanicsburg at the age of 15 years and learned the painting trade with Mr. John Bannaster?." NOTE: Obviously Alexander and Maria were living some time after the birth of Emanuel, since the family appears intact on the 1820 census. Both, however, must have died when Emanuel was very very young. The Eppley Uncle that he lived with was probably Emanuel Eppley, who in 1830 has a male aged 5-10 in his household (Emanueal Eppley never had any children).
