Miller is an enterprising citizen of Sidman and representative of the successful type of business man of the community. He was born at this place, June 3, 1876, and is the son of Samuel J. and Sarah A. (Livingstone) Miller. Samuel J. Miller, deceased, was a native of Somerset County, Pa., as was his wife. They spent the greater part of their lives at Sidman, where Mr. Miller operated grist and saw mills. He was also an extensive farmer. Mr. and Mrs. Miller are buried in Dunmire Cemetery. They had the following children: Alfred L., John F., Daniel C., Silas L., Lizzie, Josiah W., Samuel R., Barbara Ann, and Cora. Samuel R. Miller received his education in the old Wissinger schoolhouse near Sidman. He farmed on the home place until he was 21 years of age, at which time he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad, working on the right of way between Lovett and Loydell. He was later employed in the saw mill of Gross & Johnson, at Rutherford, Pa., after which he was employed for nine years as a carpenter by the firm of Grumling & Kaufman. He then engaged in the contracting business for himself at Portage and later returned to Sidman, where he was a member of the firm of Miller & Costlow, contractors and builders. In 1917 Mr. Miller became owner of the business, which he has since successfully conducted. He is also an extensive lumber dealer. In 1921 Mr. Miller built the local water works, of which he is owner. He is also a director of the Union Deposit Bank of South Fork. On Oct. 7, 1898, Mr. Miller was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Miller, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Eash) Miller, natives of Somerset County, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Miller have a daughter, Thelma. They are also rearing a nephew, Paul Revere Thomas, the son of Cora A. Thomas, who is deceased. Mr. Miller is a Republican and a member of the Lutheran Church. He and his wife have a wide acquaintance in Cambria County. The town of Sidman was built on the farm of Samuel J. Miller, and at his death his son, Samuel R. Miller, bought the property.
