Notes
a. Note:   was a surname attached to the family name meaning "Rye" because the family owned a plot high on the extinct volcano which was so rocky and of such poor soil that it would not grow anything except the hardy rye from which they made a black polenta or black bread. White bread from wheat flour was a delicacy reserved for weddings, funerals, and such (too costly for the numerous Segala Zendrons). Elia Zendron's father (Bortolo), earned his living picking mulberry leaves to feed silkworms. He fell out of one of those high trees on the mountain and died immediately of a broken neck. Whereupon, Eli and his brothers Domenic and Giovanni together with their mother left the land of their birth to seek their fortune in the coal field of western PA. There, they brought up there daily bread from underground. For the illiterate young men it was comparable to jumping out of the frying pan into the fire to leave the pure mountain air to live underground and die of Black Lung Disease. Eli and Ottilia had studied in Germany in a Trade school where she became a dress-maker and a good tailor. She and her three daughters established a small store which produced enough income to see the family through the terrible economic depression which struck the world in the period between WWI and WWII. Eli made his own grappa and kept boarders and he made wine also, enough to sell some of it. Eli retired as a Coal Miner to spend his final years smoking his foul smelling "Five Brothers" tobacco on his back porch in Fredericktown, PA (Marisa). Petition for naturalizaton states birthdate as 8/15/1870 at Tiroli Austria.
Note:   Elia Zendron came from a branch of the Zendron's called "Segala" which
