She came with her parents first to Wisconsin and later, to St. Louis where her family remained. Henry's mother, Dora, two brothers and two sisters immigrated to the United States from Bremen, Germany, landing at New Orleans and then joining Henry in St. Louis in 1858. In the early 1860s, the Mesenbrinks moved to the Chicago area. Henry lived there about three years. Henry and his wife moved to a settlement called Winnebago in Houston County, Minnesota. He enlisted May 27, 1864 in Company F of the 2nd Minnesota Infantry at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was honorably discharged July 11, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. Henry, along with his family, moved to Jackson County, Iowa around 1867. His brothers and mother also moved to Van Buren Township, Jackson County. The mother, Dora, died at the age of 84 in Jackson County in 1869. Henry again decided to move and this time to Crawford County Iowa in 1882. He died November 7, 1923 in Charter Oak at the age of 88 years and was survived by Eda Bray Mesenbrink and a multitude of descendants. Submitted by Dorothy Mesenbrink Champ INA MESENBRINK MAY Ina Mae Mesenbrink was born September 24, 1913 to August Fred and Minnie Griffin Mesenbrink. Her grandfather was Henry William and her great-grandfather was Henry John Mesenbrink. My earliest, most vivid memories are of the farm we lived on two miles south of Charter Oak where I attended school at the little one-room school house from the second to the eighth grade. Later, after graduating from Charter Oak HIgh School in 1930, I went back and taught in that same school for four years! Some of those years I stayed in Charter Oak with my Uncle Roy and Aunt Lorena and walked the two miles to school five days a week. I got there early enough to start a fire in the big, round stove with corn cobs soaked in kerosene, a little kindling, and finally, chunks of coal on top. I had to try and get the room warm before the children arrived--sometimes it was a struggle. On a very cold day, it was never warm enough so we would sit around the stove and put our feet under it! By that time, my parents had moved to Denison, so on the weekends, I would try to visit with them. By 1936, my brother, Dick, who was married by then and living in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, brought his wife to visit with us. He was also to take a couple pickup trucks back to Idaho for his boss. We decided to head back to Idaho with them since work in Iowa was scarce at that time. We loaded the pickups with the few possessions we just couldn't leave behind and also some camping equipment to use on the long trip. We made quite a sight as we drove along with three people in the cabs of loaded trucks. There was my father, mother, sister Leone and myself, and, of course, Dick and his wife, Maria. My sister Arlean had married Bob Groth by then and wasn't with us and brother Leo was living in Bonners Ferry at that time. I met Russell May in Bonners Ferry and married him November 20, 1940 at Kellogg, Idaho. We moved around a lot since he was in construction work--road building, mostly. In 1951, we went to Alaska where we stayed for ten years. At first, we drove out to the states every fall and back to Alaska in the spring. We drove over the Alaska Highway seven times! How I would love to do that again, but I'm afraid at my age it wouldn't be quite as much fun. Anyway, in 1956, I applied for and got a teaching job in the village of Fortuna Ledga on the banks of the Yukon River. The only way into the area was to fly or by boat when the river wasn't frozen over. The population was 100---counting me. I had two white children in school and the rest were Eskimos, Indians or a mixture of both. After that school term, I got a postition closer to Ankorage at a place called Chugiak. I stayed there three years and we decided to go back to the "boondocks", this time to Red Devil, a mining town on the Kuskokwim River. After two school terms there, my husband wanted to live nearer to his mother who was widowed and quite elderly. So back to Idaho we went. My husband, Russell was killed in a highway construction accident on July 8, 1970, at Roseburg, Oregon. I was working as a bookkeeper in Portland, Oregon, at the time. I was transferred from the Greyhound Food Management Corp. of Portland to Los Angeles in 1971, where I worked as a bookkeeper until I retired in 1978. I had started in Portland in 1961. I will say now briefly how I love living in Los Angeles, in spite of crime, earthquakes and smog! Submitted by Ina Mesenbrink May and Dorothy Mesenbrink Champ LOUIS F. MESENBRINK Louis Mesenbrink, a farmer of Section Nine, Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, was born in the village of Basse, Hannover, Germany in 1839, a son of Johan H. and Dora Dannenburg Mesenbrink, also natives of that place. The father, Johan, was a shepherd by occupation and his death occurred in Basse, Germany in 1842. In 1858, the mother, Mrs. Dora Messenbrink, sailed from Bremen, Germany and, after a voyage of three months, landed at New Orleans; later went to St. Louis, and thence to Chicago. Her death occurred in Jackson County, Iowa at the age of 84. The families had lived in Jackson County for several years. Mrs. Dora Mesenbrink reared (1) Dora born October 3, 1827 and died in 1891, who was the wife of William Greene; (2) Sophia born July 24, 1830, who was the wife of August Henne and lived in Illinois; (3) Mary born August 25, 1833, who was the wife of August Pock and remained in Germany; (4) Henry J. born November 18, 1835 and died November 7, 1963 (?), who married Maria Flier; (5) Wilhelm born December 21, 1841, who remained in Germany; and (6) Frederick born on December 23, 1842, who married Rosena Harms and was also of Hanover Township. He enlisted at the start of the Civil War, Company I, 105th Illinois Infantry Division for three years, was mustered into service at Chicago, assigned to the Army of the West under General Sherman and took part in the Battles of Resaca and Lookout Mountain. He was with Sherman on his 'march to the sea' and received his honorable discharge at Atlanta, Georgia in 1865. After the close of hostilities, Louie resumed farming at Cook County, Illinois and the following year removed to Jackson County, Iowa. Louie was married in Jackson County on October 7, 1866 to Sophia Harms, a native of Illinois and the daughter of Henry Harms, one of the early pioneers of Jackson County. By this union, there were seven children: Rosena born December 24, 1867, married Fred Quade June 18, 1885 and died January 1, 1937; Henry L. born June 1, 1870 married Anna Lorenzen August 1, 1898 and died August 18, 1950; Fred C. B. born April 15, 1872 married Bertha Jahn April 28, 1901 and died August 30, 1944; Marie B. born May 26, 1824 (?) married Johan Klinker June 27, 1893 and died January 13, 1968; Peter born 1877 married Edith Montgomery in December of 1908 and died in June of 1913; Ludwig born 1878 and died July 19, 1878; and Emma L. born August 27, 1879, married Herman Neubaum July 7, 1903 and died December 21, 1971. Louie, as he was called, lived in Crawford County more than 50 years, being considered a man with unusual vitality and vigor. He came to Crawford County in a covered wagon in 1869 when practically all of the county was virgin prairie. He started farming operations and was among the first to break the sod in Hanover Township. He was active and progressive and, when the county was laid out, he named his township "Hanover" after the place of his birth. In 1880, the mother, Sophia Harms Mesenbrink, died and four years later, he married Minnie Keyser, a native of Saxton, Germany. Minnie was the daughter of William Keyser who came to Crawford County and later went to Dakota where he died in 1880. This wife died in 1885, having been married to Louie just one year to the day. Louie then married Sophia Krohn, a native of Holstein, Germany and the daughter of Dethlef Krohn. Mrs. Sophia Krohn Mesenbrink died on May 19, 1891, leaving one child, Sophia. Three other children of the marriage died in infancy. Louie took avid interest in politics, including the Prohibition Party, school board and others, but never sought an office. He was indeed a self-made man and one of the first settlers of his township which he named in honor of his old home in Germany. Submitted by Dorothy Mesenbrink Champ WILHELM MESENBRINK Wilhelm Mesenbrink was born April 11, 1876 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa to Frederich and Rosena Harms Mesenbrink. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. On September 10, 1901 he married Sophia Behrensen who came from Schleswig, Germany in 1888. To this union were born four children: Bernhardt "Ben" born June 24, 1902 in rural Charter Oak and died September 26, 1986 in Boone, Iowa; Esther (Collins) born October 23, 1906, lives in Concord, California; Lillian (Kurtz) born March 13, 1913, who is deceased, date unknown; and Leonard born September 28, 1917 and died May 26, 1981. Wilhelm lived many years of the farm. He and brother Emil owned a steam threshing machine that would travel, within the season, farm to farm to thresh. He eventually moved away from the farm into Charter Oak but they continued to do threshing. He also, for a period of time, owned and operated a saloon and pool hall in Charter Oak. He passed away December 20, 1950. AUTHUR BY: Jackie Mesenbrink
