a. Note:   [CM_666.FTW] CHRISTIANSEN, Anthony & Wilhelmina (Prien) History of Crawford County, Iowa, 1987: page 339-340 Christiansen, Anthony W. A. written by: Mrs. Herbert Teut (Arlene Christiansen) Anthony Christiansen was born December 8, 1857, at Brusbuello, Kreis-Husum-Holstein, Germany. His parents were Carsten and Ingeburg Katrina (Volquartsen) Christiansen. They were the parents of 10 children: Christian, Anthony, Fred, Broder, Peter, Carsten, Johanna who married Andreas Lorenzen, Ida who married Henry Plough, Catharina who married Hinrich Lehfeldt, and Bregetta who married Siever Messer. The ship that Anthony came to American on was having trouble with wind storms and the in the North Atlantic Ocean, when they were rescued by another ship somewhere around Iceland. Everyone was starving, as they were at sea longer than expected. The captain of the rescuing ship ordered pea soup for all; but only one half cup per person for the first few meals. Anton was then 14 years of age. Anton's first wife, Wilhelmina Prien was born April 27, 1863 at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The Prien family also were German. The reason she was born in Brazil, was that the winds took their ship to Brazil instead of the United States. Wilhelmina's brother-in-law, Heinrich Bumann, then worked in the coal mines in Brazil until the family finally got enough money together to get the United States by railroad and ship. They settled near Denison, Iowa. Mr. Bumann's family lived at Denison. He worked for the railroad all his life here in the United States. Mr. Bumann was kidnapped for a whole year by someone who wanted something from the railroad. He worked on the section by the Northwest Depot. He had a house and a barn, one cow and a hog or two, but never had a horse or ever drove one. This was located just west of the depot in Denison. Wilhelmina's father had many financial problems and a farm mortgage; one day he simply disappeared, and no one ever saw him again. Anthony and Wilhelmina Prien were married November 15, 1880 at Denison, Iowa. Their children: (1) Julius, married Hulda Baak; (2) Caroline (Lena), married William Meyer; (3) Carl; (4) Marie, married William Evers; (5) Albert, married Alvina Schneckloth; (6) Bernhardt, married Eleonore Clausen; (7) Ludwig, married Agnes Brogan; (8) Johann, married Emma Schoenfeld; (9) Infant son, died at birth or soon after; (10) Henry, married Adeline Wiese; (11) Otto, married Laura Moeller. Only Henry survives, and he lives in Denison. The year is 1889: Anton had shipped livestock to Chicago by railroad. His wife was to get him from the depot in Denison on his return. Wilhelmina packed up her family and hitched the team of horses to the wagon (sled), and started out for Denison. They were overtaken by a blizzard but she continued until the horses would not go against the storm any longer. She then unhitched the team tied them close by and upset the sled box. She scattered the straw, quilts, and horse blankets, then put the children, Julius, Lena, Carl and Mary under the box. They were comfortable as Julius plainly remembered. This happened somewhere east of the six mile house, south of Schleswig, near the Mesenbrink home. After the storm, Wilhelmina walked to the Mesenbrink home, for help to get her sled box set up, and organized again, she then drove on to Denison. the result was that they all got diptheria. They stayed at the Bumann home west of the depot in Denison. Mrs. Bumann was a sister to Wilhelmina. There, little brother, Carl, died from diptheria. They had his funeral before they returned to the farm. The years 1890 to 1896 were spent in Charter Oak, where Anton owned a saloon and hotel. Anton purchased 260 acres in Soldier Township, which he sold in 1899, buying 543 acres in Jackson Township. He later sold this and bought 160 acres in Crawford County and 160 acres in Ida County. Upon selling these properties, he purchased 480 acres in Nebraska, north of Bloomfield on the bank of the Missouri River. Disposing of his Nebraska land, he bought 320 acres at Gregory, South Dakota in 1909. November 15, 1910, Anton's wife, Wilhelmina, was killed in an accident. She was trying to control a team of horses, that were spooked at a loading station in Gregory, South Dakota. Anthony remarried and spent his final years on 40 acres, south of Mapleton in Cooper township, Monona County, Iowa. He died March 27, 1930. The family service was held at home, out of doors as the house was too small. The funeral service was held at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Mapleton with burial in Morgan Township Cemetery, Schleswig, Iowa. His seven sons were the pallbearers.
