Notes
a. Note:   Grandma's mother died when she was young and she was raised by her Mother's sister and her husband, the Lergs, although they never adopted her. My own Mother and her brothers and sister called Mr. Lerg, Grandpa Dan and considered the 5 sons their uncles. The only Uncle I have met is Uncle Eddie. From my understanding, all the Uncles were a bit eccentric and none married or had children. As of this writing,March 6, 2001, Uncle Eddie is still alive and is living in a trailer on Round Lake Road in DeWitt, Michigan. My Dad sees him from time to time. My Mother was especially fond of Uncle Eddie and invited him to holiday meals, once he even came to Easter dinner at my Housen Maryland Avenue before I was married. Grandma (Helen) Mac married my Grandpa Mac young, my Mom said in order to get away from all the work of the farm. I think she left school one year before completing her Registered Nurse degree. Grandma Mac was a Licensed Practical Nurse for over 40 years and, according to her obituary from the Lansing State Journal, was twice named "Nurse of the Year" and served as past-President of the Michigan Practical Nurses Association. At the time of my birth she was working as scrub nurse at St. Lawrence Hospital and was there in the operating room with my Mother and me when I was born via Caesarian section, delivered by Dr. Leshock, on May 6, 1958. Grandma said that I was just like "a rose bud opening her petals" as I came to life in the world. Although her obituary states she died at the hospital this is incorrect. Grandma Mac died at her apartment on Hagadorn Road in East Lansing,in my Mother's arms. Mom said she could tell that the time was nearby the look in her eyes and the way her eyes rolled back in her head. My Mother was the only one with her. I am glad that my Mom told me this story of my Grandmother's death, because it helped to prepare me for my Mother's own death on January 12, 2000. I was with my Mom as she passed away. I could tell that the time was close by the look in my Mother's eyes and the way they rolled back in her head, as my Mother had described to me about my Grandma). I called my Dad and my Aunt Kathy Anderson back into the room (they were going upstairs for a rest) so they could be there as I just had a feeling that this was it. All three of us were at my Mom's side holding her hands and reassuring her that it was okay to go now. ( I will copy parts of these notes to place in the notes about my Mother, Kathleen White). Both my Mom and my Grandma Mac (and also Grandpa Mac) are buried at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery on Willow St. in Lansing, Michigan. Per Aunt Joan: Although the Lergs did not adopt her, she did call them Mother and Father.
