Notes
a. Note:   raduated from Business School in Phoenix, Arizona. She attended one year in business administration at University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado. !She was employed as a secretary to Maricopa County Health Director for 14 years. Mary Ella went back to work when Karen was three years old as a secretary to Self-Aid Workshops in Phoenix, Arizona. !History from Lucille Wimer: "An attractive and pleasant girl. Served in the Waves during World War II." !Mother wrote me 31 October 1983: "Shirley - while you were here did you go see Tissie. Sometimes she Tissie think it you not Karen. I asked her where her wrist watch and she said Shirley has it. She is in the Hospital care center in Phoenix. Tissie is much better at times - can remember you. She was moved to Phoenix Friday." !MaMa also sent me an insert from the Mesa Christian Church bulletin: "Our special prayers are requested for our Church Secretary, Mary Ellen Vaughn and Howard in this time when both of them are seriously ill. Thank you for sharing your love." This was the time when she had shingles in her left eye. Even to this day, 27 April 1995, she has trouble with that eye. !Tissie hurt her shin while we were at Lake Powell May 1996 - to the bone. Anyway, I had to go back to stay with her until it finally healed - then back, as she had hurt her back - she would only get up to eat. Then, Karen put her in a Care Center - Karen called me 23 Dec 1996 that the Care Center called and said she was in diapers, and would do nothing - if I would go stay with her, so I left the next day. MerriLu had called before and told Monte Tissie had atrophy of the brain - atrophy is the withering of an organ which had previously been normally developed. She was all they said. I got her up the day after Christmas, to walk down to the dining room to eat. She did really well, as far as I was concerned, using her walker. I stayed with her all the time, except to go for diapers. I was even getting her into the shower, until she started vomiting 6 Jan 1997, what I thought was blood, she had a ruptured rectum. I called 911. Went with Tis in the ambulance - after X-rays, urin, blood tests, I had to sign for an emmergency operation, even though Karen was coming in at l:00. She had a five hour operation, was in Intensive Care till 19 Jan 1997, Sunday, put in Hospice 24 Jan 1997. and died at 7:10 that evening. Karen had gone back to Salt Lake City, the day before, so she didn't make it in till midnight, after Tissie had passed away. Karen had her cremated. Bill asked if we could have some of the ashes to bury her in the Peterson plot, and she said we could have them all. She was supposed to have been shipped to Rocky Ford, Colorado, to be buried next to Howard. All us kids had to sign that it was all right for her to be buried there. There are five of us kids left, and four plots there. I believe four can go into a hole that have been cremated, and two in - one on top of the other other - in the other plots. Anyway, she had a nice service at the East Christian Church, and a nice graveside service. The Church let us serve lunch there. They ran it. Left the church most of the flowers. My brothers and I had gotten a over $100 wreath. Flowers are a lot too. We had a small white cross put in it too. I typed about Tissie's death with one hand - have broken my right wrist. Forgot to say that her son-in-law had blown his brains out 1 June 1996- went with her to the funeral. We stayed for a week. She had no business walking on her leg. Wierd. !28 June 2004. Just talked to Karen to see if she had a death certificate on Tissie and she said yes - would send me a copy. I told her to never mind when she knew for sure that she had died of perionitis from a perforated rectum.
