Notes
a. Note:   "CHILLED TO DEATH"On last Thursday three young men of Jordan came to Sterlingalong toward dusk and proceeded to wind up the day, whichshould be regarded ore sacredly, in a frolic. They wereWilliam Stauffer, the blacksmith at Penrose, son of RipleyStauffer, Addison John, sone of George D. and Marius, sone ofChalkley John. The three were about 24, 18, and 16 years ofage respectively. The two younger boys had been enticed to cometo town by Stauffer, who had earlier in the day endeavored tomake arrangements with another member of the John Family to dothe same thing. Marius John had reached the "corner" on one ofhis father's horses; he fell in with the proposition and theanimal was put to a democrat (?) and away the three went.According to his story, they parted after reaching town and didnot come together again until after the theater or about 11p.m. Then it was observed that Stauffer carried a 1/2 gallonjug. At the stable where had been left their horses, they hitthe jug and found it full of whiskey. Several times on the coldride home they repeated the act and when Penrose was reachedthe two younger members of the party were badly intoxicated. It would not do to take them home in that condition, reflectedStauffer, so he drives up to the blacksmith shop and puts theinsensible boys in the cold building (whether he remained therehimself seems a question of doubt, as he was at home early nextmorning). Without fire or cover, the two boys slept thatfearful sleep, their vitalities succumbing gradually to thecold. In the morning Stauffer went to the home of the Johnsand informed them of the condition of the boys. They hastenedto the shop and found both boys unconscious. While a messengerwas sent post-haste for the fathers and a doctor in Sterling,Addision was removed to the home of Ripley Stauffer and theredied in spite of all Dr. Anthony could do. Marius, who hadbeen removed home was still unconscious. He was much betterthis morning, but suffering with badly frozen feet andotherwise (?). A warrant was sworn out by Mr. John last nightand placed in the hands of Constable Haberer who went toPenrose this morning and arrested William Stauffer, charginghim with furnishing liquor to minors.
