a. Note:   Elida, Ohio is named after Elida John. The town was named byElida's brother Griffith. He was a surveyor and in charge ofconveyances for 20 years in Northumberland, Columbia, Montour,and Schuylkill Counties in Pennsylvania. He was known foraccuracy, justice, and honor. He was elected to be on firstboard of directors in the Shamokin Township School and was afirst director of the Shamokin Bank. He was also a stalwartadvocate of the temperance cause.About 1840, he had an active interest and part in theanti-slavery movement. His home furnished refuge for escapedslaves and his house was recognized as a station on theUnderground Railroad.The cemetary where Elida and parts of his family are buried:This was formerly called "Quaker Burial Grounds of East JordanMonthly Meeting of Friends". Elida gave the grounds for bothchurch and burial grounds and in his will he left a neat sumfor the latter's upkeep.The proceeds from the sale of the Meeting House helped largelyin putting the cemetert into its present (in mid 1980's)condition. This was the original Board of Trustees: Clarence,Harry, and George D. John.
