Title: Schoharie Reformed Lutheran Church book Page: MARCUS BELLINGER, - Margaretha Zeh Author: researched by Henry Z. Jones, Jr |
| a. |
Note: #3 Source 1p. 6,8, Marcus 2 Bellinger, the First, born about 1682, died before May, 1746. NOTE- His first son was named as usual after the grandfather, Johannes, Not named Marcus. To be a widower and to be married a second time in 1737 to Maria Margretha Zeh, would take care of the two wives of #21 Mathew Warner and the two wives of #23 Johannes Zeh Jr. Married first Anna Conrad, 4 or 5 Bellinger children by this marriage. Public Documents He was in the War of 1711, a volunteer from Annsberg, Documentary History of New York, Volume III, p. 343. Also Book of Names p. 126. He arrived Oct. 6, 1710 on the Hudson from New York. Subsistence List in Journal (London) 1710, Oct. 4 and Dec. 31, 4 adults; 1711 Mar. 25, Jun. 24, 4 adults; Sep.29, 2 adults; Dec. 24, 4 adults, 1 young, 9-14-9; "Ditto" 4 adults1b., 6sh, Od; 1712, Mar. 25, 4 adults; 1712 Jun. 24, Sep. 13, 4 adults, 1 young. W.A. Knittles book page 283. Look up the entries for #5 Henry and see if you can imagine that in the summer of 1711 the Canada Expedition carried both #3 Marcus and #5 Henry, leaving 2 adults only, on subsistence, and that Henry was married 80 days before Dec. 24, 1711, on Oct. 5, 1711. Not the entry, marked "ditto" for the Dec. 24, 1711, 65 days subsistence charged to Henry and that "ditto" entry on same date as for Henry, is 13 days subsistence for Marcus. It may be explained in part (p. 103 of Journal) by the unequal dates of subsisting in, and of leaving New York. See Book of Names p. 66. They may be correction too. History and Records 1715- 17, Simmendinger Census adds two more children, a total of 5 at this time. Schoharie Reformed Church registered #3 Marcus 2 for marriage Sep. 24, 1737. Schoharie Reformed Church registered his daughter #24 Catharina 3 for marriage Mar. 3, 1738. Loonenburg Church Record (Athens, New York) shows #3 Marcus married Oct. 11, 1737; was "wed at Schoharie." He was a widower Living in Huntersfield which was on high ground east of a point half way between Schoharie and Middleburg. See Mattice, also Bell, also Vosburg's notes in Schoharie Reformed Church Record. he married a girl about 30 years his junior. Did a family row cause him to get the Looenburg preacher instead of the one at Schoharie? Anyhow, he had had no sons yet, only hopes. Comments The names of the older (5 or more) children of Marcus can be determined by dividing up the Bellinger girls in the Schoharie Reformed Church record, between Marcus and Henry (who furnished all the Schoharie county Bellinger) where maiden names of wives are given in the birth entries. (1) Let me urge the reader to study the sponsors in the church records and assign all these Bellinger girls to #3 Marcus and #5 Henry trying to make them "fit" as in a cross word puzzle. In some instances the girls might belong to either Marcus or Henry, except for the later date of beginning of Henry's family, see Subsistence List entries. Some of Marcus' 5 children were almost sure to have died. We can generally allow 20 years for each girl before her marriage or birth of her first child, to arrive at her own birth year. Sponsors on Oct. 6, 1731 and Nov. 7, 1738, Schoharie Reformed Church are "Margrieta Bellinger and Adam Zee." No later record connects these two, and since Cady shows #5 Henry with a daughter Margaret born Oct. 9, 1739 (incorrect date) our # 29 Margaret is given to #3 Marcus. In 1717 Marcus and his wife Anna were sponsors for Catherina, daughter of John Hess, Stone Arabia Lutheran Church. This record was entered at a much later date. Same date, same daughter, same parents have Anna Catharine Conradin as sponsors in the Kochelthal records also, and there you are, for the surname of the first wife of Marcus! Miss Conrad. When the Zeh and #3 Marcus moved to Huntersfield on the south side of big bend in Fox Creek, the inevitable happened. John Zee married two of the daughters of Marcus, who becomes a widower, and who later became the brother in law to his own son in law, and then preceded at age 55 to raise his first son and a few more daughters. Marcus died and left a widow. See sponsors in birth record May 20, 1746, Schoharie Reformed Church. Please observe that Roscoe's History of Schoharie county is badly mixed on the various men named Marcus for it gives nothing specific. Its data are given by each family branch only, with no attempt to check the statements against each other. Roscoe calls one "Marcus of Middleberg," who had John Jost 4 M., page 212. He states incorrectly the "Sharon Bellingers come from Marcus of Middleberg," p. 2. See also p 218 and in the Appendix pp. XII, XIX, XX!. For those not tired of this Schoharie County Marcus, please look up History of Spartanburg, South Carolina p. 378, where there appears another Marcus. Note on the Zeh family. The Simmendinger Census gives Johannes Zeh and Magdalena with 4 children, in New Stuttgart, Book of names, p. 19. They were Johannes Jr., who married #23 and #24, the daughters of #3 Marcus; Maria Margaretha Zehe, Married #3 Marcus Christian; Adam who married Anna Meyer. See Governor Hunters Ration List, John Zehe, Book of Names p. 72. Widow Magdalena Zeh died Jul. 7, 1749, age 78. See Cady's Volume 2 p. 254. Brown's History of Schoharie County, 1823, p. 12 tell about Widow Zeh in her 1718 Molly Pitcher, Nancy Hart role of robust heroine of the Sheriff Adams' (from Albany) "rough housing." She and her lady friends rolled him in barnyard puddles, rode him on a rail fours miles, beat him with a fence picket, broke two ribs, ruined one eye, spilled indignity in his face and let him lie. The widow certainly "done him Dirt!" Where was Carrie Nation? We get the date for his second marriage from the Schoharie Reformed Church record. This record tells us he was a widower and lived in Honderfield and that Maria also lived in Honderfield at the time of the marriage. Date of Johannes birth is from St. Pauls Lutheran Church record, Schoharie. Sponsors were Johannes Zee and Catharina Bellinger.
