a. Note:   Simon Schaefer grew up with the developing City of Fond du Lac. He would hide under the bed when the Indians came to visit. His mother gave the Indians their favorite treat, sauerkraut! Simon was a private in the Fond du Lac Guard from 1881 until 1886. In 1888, he was described as the popular head clerk at McKibben Bros. store in the marriage announcement to Ellen Blankenburg, The lucky young couple had a home built for them by her parents, at 9 Linden Street. Simon Schaefer was an active political figure in Fond du Lac. He was a member of the City Council, helping to establish Lakeside Park. He was County Treasurer. He served as Under sheriff to George Watson in 1896 and 1897. He was elected Sheriff in 1898. He served as the Chief of Police. After retirement from public office, he ran a real estate and insurance office. He also had the first bowling alley in Fond du Lac. In 1920, he and his son, established Automotive Sales and Service.
 He picked the spot by the window at Rienzi Mausoleum so he could raise up and occasionally look out the window!
