a. Note:   Carl Blankenburg was the son of a farmer in Liebenwalde, Germany. He completed a cabinetmaker apprenticeship in Blankenburg in the early 1840's. He received permission to travel to the United States on February 28, 1849. Charles left Germany, arriving in New York on May 6, 1849. He filed his Intent of Naturalization in Milwaukee on November 6, 1849. Written under a picture of Charles Blankenburg in Auto Sales and Service Window, " Charles Blankenburg, grandfather of present occupant, purchased Lot 4, Block K in Darlings Addition on December 26, 1865. He walked to Fond du Lac in 1849 from Milwaukee, didn't realize he was here ( in Fond du Lac) and walked on to Taycheedah and had to walk back! He started the first furniture store in 1849. It became a large and properous company that sold fine quality furniture. Our kitchen table is from the store, Blankenburg is stenciled on the table leaf box. Charles became a properous citizen of Fond du Lac. He owned and sold many parcels of land in the city. A member of The Sons of Herman, a fraternal organization.
