a. Note:   Helen's middle name came from her aunt Minnie. Helen's dad would call her Johnnie, as joke since she was the third girl. She was her dad's helper on the farm. In the summer, there might be a hired hand to help too. The family lived in Pleasant Twp, Hardin County, Iowa. The farm house was heated by a cook stove and a heater. In 1917, the new house (addition) was built with a furnace, and bathroom. But without electricty. The four girls had a play house in the willow grove, and for a time they had a grape arbor. The basement housed the wood and coal, vegetables, potatoes and canned goods and the furnace, water tank and pump (water) where in a third basement room. Helen and her sisters attended Pleasant Center No 5 school. Helen took the 9th grade at Goose Creek, finishing High School in Eldora. She had good grades, even skipped a year (not sure which year this was). ________________________________________ Helen went to school at Pleasant Center #5, Going to Goose Creek for her 3 quarters of freshman year. Then going to High School in Eldora, wintering with her Grandmother Wilhelmina Tietz Ziesman. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Helen taught school from 1927 until 1935. 1927/28 - Sherman School, boarded with her Aunt Elsie 1928/29 - Goose Creek, lived at home 1929/1934 - Fairfax School, lived with Mike & Katherine Bowman or at home 1934/35 - Palamer (sp?) # 5 in Grundy County. Helen attended teachers college in Cedar Falls, Iowa
