Son*W*S*Oct 1892*07*S*MI*MI*PA Brown, Beatrice Dau*W*S*Oct 1894*05*S*MI*MI*PA --------------------------------- Information from Lucille Warner via Nancy Zimmerman Dunham: "Sylvester Parley Brown was born September 4, 1846 in Isabella County in Michigan. He was married to Emmaline Oberholtzer by the Justice of the Peace, November 6, 1870 in Sebewa which is located in Ionia County. Emmaline was born June 30, 1854 in Pennslyvania. She came with her family to Michigan at the age of eleven. They had ten children: Alvira Belle, Lewis Henry, Hattie, Lillian, Samuel Parley, Emma Ethel, Mary Alta, William Sherman, Nellie Beatrice, and Floyd. According to the 1900 census their oldest child, Alvira, was born in Ohio. They lived in Lenawee County for a few years before moving to Norwood Township in Charlevoix County where they lived on a small farm." "William, Beatrice and Floyd were born in the house on the samll farm located in Charlevoix County, Norwood Township on Parsons Road. When Beatrice was nine years old, the family moved to Torch Lake, where they operated the former Oberholtzer hotel. Sylvester worked at times piling lumber. One day he fell off a lumber pile and evidently hurt his head which was the cause of his death later. He passed away April 11, 1904, after a week long illness at the age of 57 years of a cerebral hemmorrhage. According to the 1900 census: Samuel(Parley), Emma, Mary, William, and Beatrice were living at home, plus John Macoy and Percy Charley, boarders, born in New York. Floyd passed away November 19, 1904, at the age of three. The following month Emmaline Brown took her daughters, Mattie and Beatrice to Lake Odessa. Beatrice told me in 1986 that her mother cooked at the lumber camp in Jangleville, south of Clarke School. According to the Elk Rapids paper, Emma Brown returned to Torch Lake to reopen the hotel at the end of February, 1905. She had been in Atwood with Beatrice and Mattie during the winter. In July, 1905 she went to Central Lake for an extended visit, according to thenewspaper, so that had to be the time she worked for a family in Central Lake doing housework. According to the Lake Odessa newspaper, Beatrice was with her. Mattie was working in the canning factory in Central Lake. In March, 1906 she moved back to Torch Lake but shortly after she left for Lake Odessa where her sister Deba, and family lived. While in Lake Odessa she did housework for a Mr. Ainsworth. Mr. Ainsworth told her if she took care of him until he died he would will his property to her. She got the house after he died. (Robert Ainsworth died March 5, 1910 at the age of 78 years). Beatrice was still with her. The above story was told to me by Beatrice." --------------------------------- Sources: Name : MI 1900 Census, Vol 14, ED 18, Sheet 6B, Line 51, 6/11/1900 ===== From the url: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/ViewStory.aspx?pid=-1957121020&tid=1294957&oid=1ac1bbaf-85b5-4ecc-b6f2-311ba60dc0ca&pg=0 Sylvester Parley Brown Added by gleasonclan on 31 May 2008 This information comes from a book called, "Pioneer Notes," by Grace Hooper. She knew many pioneer families that lived in the Antrim, Charlevoix area. She wrote notebooks about these families and spoke with many of the older citizens. A family member of hers was clearing out her attic and found her notebooks, and published them. About Sylvester, paraphrasing, she wrote, A man from Big Rapids had a son-in-law, Sylvester Brown known as "Vet", take off pine timber from his land. Place unknown, but after the work was done, the Brown's settled to a hotel in Torch Lake. Sylvester, and his brother, John and Frank, were noted as excellent Axemen. They cleared land to open up for homesteaders. Also noted was that Sylvester's children were all dulcimer players, and their talent was the "sweetest sound."
