Notes
a. Note:   From "Family Tree of John and Rebecca Zimmerman" by Kathryn May Zimmerman Sertich and Dorothy Alice Zimmerman Scott, July 8, 1989: Herbert Roy Zimmerman spoke often of his parents but all that is remembered is that he spoke of BettsVille Ohio. He and his twin Herbert Ray visited Ohio when they were 18 years old and spoke of relatives all across Ohio. He spoke of prosperous farms and of cordial welcomes all over Ohio. He also spoke of his Dad (Frank D.) as being ironwilled and having a bad temper. He removed him and his twin from school early...after they had completed the fourth grade. They both had to go work on the farm. My other grandmother, a neighbor of theirs, spoke of Grandma Zimmerman(Catherine) running to her house with a twin on each hand because she was terrified of their father. He was drunk and presently came to Grandma Harris' house and demanded his wife. Grandma Harris glared at him and shouted right back at him and suggested what he could do. Apparantly her spunk amused him because he laughed and became more agreeable. One of Herbert Roy's daughters, Bernice Zimmerman Kroll, remembers the names MADDEN or MEADOWS. We don't know if this is on the Zimmerman or the Hite side. Grandma Zimmerman gradually became blind due to cataracts; he had difficulty seeing much beyond dark and light. He did, however, make his way downtown every day to buy a drink of whiskey at the saloon. One day at the saloon he ordered his one drink and gave the bartender a dollar. The bartender in return gave him back nine coins. Grandpa didn't question him, but went home and asked his wife what they were. she told him that he had nine pennies. Grandpa immediately walked back to the saloon and proceeded to smash the place up. He beat the bartender, who then got away from Grandpa. Next Grandpa purposely smashed the prized plate glass mirror which was behind the bar, broke all the glasses and bottles he could find, as well as tables, chairs, and the piano. It was a shambles and when he left he told the bartender, whem he knew was hiding somewhere there, that he wouldn't be seeing him there again. He said, "Any business that would cheat a blind man is a bad one and I have had my last drink." That really was his last drink. Grandpa did regain his sight before he died because he had his cataracts removed at a VA hospital. Marvin Ray Zimmerman has his old powder horn and also has a handmade walnut bureau that either he, our grandfather, or his father(John B.) made. There are no nails or screws in this bureau and is made of solid walnut. Birth date on cemetary marker is 12/31/1845 but family records say it was 12/03/1845. He fought in the Civil War. Post 227 of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) To get civil war records you need a federal government GSA Form 6800 which is a request for military records from the National Archives. Frank's name on the birth certificate was Francis D. The date shows July 4, 1867 and it was issued on the 2nd. Frank came to Michigan in 1886. The route he took is unknown. Between 1886 and 1895 they lived in Mancelona, Michigan. On an 1860 Census in Green Creek, Sandusky, Ohio. John Zimmerman at that time was 60 years of age and was born in Pennslyvania. Rebecca was 58 years old, also born in Pennslyvania, Franklin 15 years old born in Ohio. --------------------------------- 1910 Michigan Soundex Antrim County, Central Lake Vol 4, E.D. 2 Line 73 Frank D.
