Notes
a. Note:   Married 1821, moved to Stark County 1824-5 --------------------------------- On the 1860 Census of Green Creek, Sandusky, Ohio: John Zimmerman was 60 years of age and born in Pennslyvania Rebecca was 58 years of age and born in Pennslyvania Benjamin, 29, born in Ohio Franklin, 15, born in Ohio John, 12, born in Ohio --------------------------------- In the book "Some Zimmerman's of Stark County, Ohio" it states the following from the 1860 Census of Green Creek, Sandusky, Ohio: Zimmerman, John; Occupation: Master Farmer b. 1800, age 60, bp Pa., r.e./p.e. $4000/$300 Wife: Rebecca, age 58, b. 1802, b.p. Pa. Green Creek Twp, dw./fm.? p. 83, date: 4 Jul. 1860 Children Sex Age B.Y. B.P. -------- --- --- ---- ----- Benjamin(farm lbr) M 29 1831 Ohio Franklin M 15 1845 Ohio John M 12 1848 Ohio --------------------------------------- In a letter from Mrs. Howard (Zimmerman) Hoeltzel it is noted that she had a Great-Grandfather David Zimmerman who was married to Sarah Swope. They had three children (Jacob, Barney, and Elizabeth). Somehow David remarried and had four children to a second wife. They are Jane, Susan, Mary, and John. She says she never knew this family. She notates that John married and went to Berkeley Co. West Virginia. The original David was born in 1780 and the John was born circa 1800. Mrs. Howard Hoeltzel 411 N. Sandusky St. Tiffin, Ohio 44883 -------------------------------------- From the "History of Seneca County, Ohio" (Chicago: Warner & Beers Company 1886) Pg. 715: Josiah Zimmerman, Farmer, P.O. Clyde, Sandusky County, is a native of Adams Township, Seneca County, Ohio. Born Oct. 20, 1847; son of John and Rebecca(Fisher) Zimmerman, who emigrated from Pennslyvania to this State and County more than 40 years ago, and here remained until their death. Our subject was reared on a farm, has followed farming all his life, married Jan 1, 1873 to Miss Harriet E. Shellhammer, who is also a native of Adams Township, born Dec. 14, 1848. To this union have been born four children: Clara J., Lena M., Jesse W., and Vinnie E.(deceased). Mrs Zimmerman is a daughter of Charles and Elizabet(Whiteman) Shellhammer, natives of Pennslyvania. They both came to Ohio in an early day, she in 1835, and he in 1842. They were married here and have reared a family of four children: Sarah J., Harriet E., William C., and Viola, all of whom are now married. In politics, Mr. Zimmerman had identified himself with the Democratic Party. -------------------------------------- From the "Commemorative Biographical Record of Sandusky and Ottawa Counties Ohio" (Beers & Co. Chicago, 1896) P. 785: John Zimmerman's Father came to Pennslyvania from Germany with his parents at age 2 years. They were farmers. John married Rebecca in 1821 and in 1822 moved to Ohio settling in Stark County, Ohio. 13 years later (?1835) they again moved, this time to Seneca County, Ohio. In 1847, they purchased the farm where William still resides in Green Creek Township, Sandusky County, Ohio. There in 1850, Rebecca died. ... John died in 1878 in Seneca county. Note: There is no Josiah Zimmerman on the census in 1860...either his given name is John Josiah and he went by John to cut down on confusion, or he was living with some other relative, or the census missed him. Josiah would have been 13 years old during the 1860 census and Rebecca would have been 45 years old when he was born. -------------------------------------- In the cemetary in Green Springs, Sandusky, Ohio (just north of Seneca County), west of the intersection of N. Kansas St. and Maple Lane, across from the Indian Springs Mobile Home Park, lies the grave of John and Rebecca Zimmerman. The inscription for John is: John Zimmerman died Jan. 23, 1879 aged 78 years, 2M's, and 12 days O.M. Mallernee Clyde The inscription for Rebecca is: Rebecca Wife of J. Zimmerman died Dec. 22, 1860 aged 58years, 24 days The grave stone is in fair shape with a lot of lichen growth on the outside. It is a tall thin shape with a star GAR marker at the base on John's side with the years 1861-1865. It seems that John did serve in the Civil War in some capacity. Beside the grave stone was one for William Zimmerman and his family. Maybe this is another family or a son. The inscriptions are as follows: William Zimmerman Mar 23, 1825-Jan 9, 1911 Elizabeth his wife April 20, 1830-Sept 5, 1886 Elijah H. son Oct 21, 1864-Aug 17, 1890 Mary B. dau Nov 12, 1858-Sept 4, 1859 Assuming that William was the son of John and Rebecca he would have been 35 years of age in the 1860 census, therefore not listed with them. There is also the possibility that he was a brother as well. ------------------------------------ From the book "Seneca County, Ohio Cemetary Inscriptions": Josiah J. Zimmerman Oct. 20, 1847-Aug. 7th, 1912 Harriet E. wife of Josiah Dec 14, 1848-Oct. 17, 1909 They are buried at the Albright Cemetary; Union Cemetary which is located at the intersection of County Roads 21 & 32, Seneca County Row 5. ---------------------------------- From the "1860 Landowners Atlas" it shows John Zimmerman owning Green Creek Township Sections 27, and 34. ---------------------------------- From the "Original Land Entries of Seneca County Ohio": John Zimmerman Seneca County S. 1/2 N.E. 1/4 Sec. 6, March 8, 1833 Adams Township --------------------------------- CENSUS OF 1830 STARK COUNTY OSNABURG TOWNSHIP This shows John Zimmerman with the following in his household: 1 Male < 5 years 1 Male 20-30 years 1 Male 30-40 years 1 Female 20-30 years This is the closest match I can find. William would have been 5 years or less, Benjamin(b.?1831), Franklin(b.1845), and John(b.1848) just thoughts for the future as was Josiah(b.1847). John, Sr. would have been 30 years at this census and Rebecca would have been 28years. The extra male could be anything from a brother to some extra labor help on the farm. I am still doing research on this aspect. --------------------------------- From "Biographys of Stark County": The following are notes on the formation of Osnaburg Township: Pennslyvania Dutch molded it to a fine state of cultivation. Land is drained by the Little Sandy and the Indian Run Rivers. Coal is present in many places. Conotton Valley Railway provided the transportation. There were many quarries. The township is bounded by: N - Nimishillen Township, E - Paris Township, S - Sandy Township and Carroll Township, W - Canton Township. Spring of 1806 1st Settlement by John Thomas, Jacob Kitt, and John Sluss (all Pennslyvania Natives). The old township was formed before Stark County, and was a part of Columbiana County. (Check in Stubenville.) From the "Barnburners and History of the Pennslyvania Dutch": Came over from Germany and settled in a town called Germantown, near Philadelphia, Pennslyvania. Most of them followed Zane's trace through Ohio - Chillocothe, Circleville, and ended in Lancaster, Ohio (Fairfield County). For historic drive start in Baltimore CR 13(Basil Western Road) West. Stop at CR36 near Pickerington. --------------------------------- 1 Jan. 1834, John and Rebacca Zimmerman of Stark County, Ohio, sold a lot (#152) in the town of Osnaburgh in Osnaburgh Twp, Stark County, Ohio for $250 to Wite, David. --------------------------------- From LDS IGI: John Zimmerman Sex: Male Event: Christening 8 March 1800 Upper Alsace Twp, Berks, Pennsylvania Father: John Zimmerman Mother: Elizabeth John Adam Zimmerman Sex: Male Event: Marriage 20 April 1778 Derry, Dauphin, Pennslyvania Spouse: Elizabeth Baumgartner ***See Sheets in book with pedigree chart. It could be the right John Zimmerman, his father. --------------------------------- From the "Clyde Sentinal" January 31, 1879 Page 4: Old Mr. Zimmerman, father of William and Mrs. John Sewalt, of Adams Township, died January 23, 1879, Age 78 years, 2 months, and 12 days. Born Nov 11, 1800 in Barks (?Berks) county Pennslyvania. He moved to Stark County in 1824 and to Seneca County in 1834. He was a resident of Green Springs until 1851. He then moved to Green Creek township where he lived until 1864. He then moved to Adams Township where he died at his residence. He joined the Presbyterian Church in Stark County and died in full faith of his immortality. --------------------------------- 1850 Census for Ohio John Zimmerman 50M Farmer $1600 Pennslyvania Margarett 49F Pennslyvania Lucetta 13F Ohio Franklin 4M Ohio Josiah 3M Ohio Note: I belive this is the right record and that somehow Rebecca's name got recorded wrong. It is just too right. --------------------------------- In his will he lists/leaves something to all his children: Lydia - his wife William - his son Green Springs, Ohio Bejamin - his son Sandusky Co, Ohio Franklin - his son Central Lake, Michigan Josiah - his son Green Springs, Ohio Anna Sewolt - his daughter (Seavolt) Michigan Luzetta McIntire - his daughter Rudolph, Wood Co, Ohio Michigan --------------------------------- March 1992 LDS IGI for Pennslyvania: John Zimmerman Parents: George & Elizabeth Christened 22 Mar 1801 in Lancaster County New Holland George Zimmerman m. Elizabeth Leidel 27 August 1796 Philadelphia County Germantown --------------------------------- March 1992 LDS IGI for Ohio Zimmerman, George W. b. 1850 Hardin County Parents John and Rebecca At the Public Library we found another Rebecca and John Zimmerman who were Andreas Zimmerman's son and Daughter-in-law. --------------------------------- From: Rita Guzzo [76336,3665] If you would like, I could copy the index pages of the 'book' I have called "A Genealogical Record of Our Zimmerman Ancestors in America" compiled by Russell and Edna Zimmerman; covering the years 1710-1992 it is an appendage to the formerly published book, "The Descendants of Isaac W. Zimmerman." They first settled in Berks County, PA. Re: tracing to France. Sometimes they went to France from Germany before going to America. It was very bad in Germany in the early 1700's, economically and religiously and there was a very bad winter in 1717. William Penn actually went to Germany Rita M. Zimmerman Guzzo 1652 Perrineville Rd. Jamesburg, NJ 08831 --------------------------------- From the "History of Seneca and Knox Counties, Ohio" Page 274, their is an article on Josiah Zimmerman that caught my eye. It could well be he is a son or grandson of one of John B's brothers: 1)Josiah Zimmerman, b. Knox Co. Ohio Oct 5, 1842. son/of Adam & Maria (Mathias) Zimmerman of German Descent Grandparents, David b. 1776 & Catharine (Schultz) Zimmerman b. 1778. Both born in Germany. 2)Josiah's father was a farmer and was born in Stark County, Ohio, May 19, 1819. At age 6 years, Josiah moved to Jackson Township, Seneca County, Ohio. --------------------------------- In East Canton Ohio, there is a church: St. Paul's Reformed Church founded in 1820 now called St. Paul's United Church of Christ. It is on the corner of Church Street and Berger. There is a graveyard across the street. There is/was no Presbyterian Church in East Canton (Osnaburg). --------------------------------- In Anna Seavolt's (his eldest daughter) obituary, it states that "...born in Lancaster County Pa, March 16, 1822. When she was two years of age her parents, John Zimmerman and wife, removed to Stark County, this State, living there ten years, after which they removed to Green Springs, at that time a howling wilderness." --------------------------------- Sources: Name : "Family Tree of John and Rebecca Zimmerman" Birth Date: Place of Birth from Death Record Birth Place : From Death Record Death Date: Seneca County Death Record Book #2, Record #11, Page 13 Death Date: Clyde Enterprise Jan 30, 1879 - Page 3, Column 1 Death Date: Clyde Sentinel Jan 31, 1879 - Page 4, Column 2 Other : Second Wife from Will Other : Will = Seneca County Case #2171, Volume 4, Page 505 Jan,1879 Other : 2nd Marriage - Seneca County Marriages Volume 5, Page 421 Other : Court Case - Swank vs. Zimmerman 1841-1845 Other : "Some Zimmerman's of Stark County, Ohio" Other : "History of Seneca County Ohio" Warner&Beers 1886, pg. 715 Other : "Commemorative Biographical Record of Sandusky & Ottawa Other : (continued) Counties Ohio" Beers & Co. 1896, pg. 785 Other : "Stark County History" Pages 407-408 Other : "1860 Landowners Atlas" (Ohio) Other : "Original Land Entries of Seneca County, Ohio" Other : Land Deed Sales in Stark County, Osnaburgh Twp Jan 1, 1834 Other : 1830 Census of Stark County Ohio Osnaburg Twp Other : 1850 Census of Seneca County Ohio Green Creek Twp Other : 1860 Census of Sandusky County Ohio Green Creek Twp
