Note: Information from Lucille Warner via Nancy Zimmerman Dunham: "Lewis Brown was born in the State of New York. He was married to Almira Tillabaugh who also was born in the State of New York. They lived in Black River, New York. I found the following information about Black River which is located in Rutland Township, Jefferson County (1840): 'Black River, New York rises near the line between Hamilton and Herkimer Countys. It enters Lake Ontario about 8 miles below Watertown. It is nearly 200 miles long. At Lyon Falls, in Lewis Co., this river falls 63 feet, below which cataract it is navigable 40 miles to Carthage. Boats can pass from this river to the Erie Canal through the Black River Canal, which extends from Rome to Lyon Falls.' 'Black River, a village of 50 houses, is partly in this town (LeRay). The first settlement was made in 1802, by a party under Benj. Brown, agent for LeRay. LeRay removed to this place in 1808, and began a liberal system of settlement, by opeing roads and building bridges and mills. The census reports 6 churches.' Lewis and Almira had seven children: Sarah Jane, Lucy A., Sylvester Parley, John, Isaac L., Frank, and Lillian A. ... I was unable to find any information on Lewis Brown in the census records. My mother always told me her grandfather's name was Henry Brown and her grandmother's name was Elmira Tillapaugh. ON the obituary or death records of some of the family members he was called Louis, and the mother's name was spelled Almira or Almirah. One grandson was named Lewis Henry Brown. Who is right? Should it be Henry Lewis (Louis) or Lewis (Louis) Henry? Should it be Elmira, Almira or Almirah? After seeing so many discrepancies in spelling and dates in census records, death records and newspaper articles, who do you believe. Take your choice. --------------------------------- From the 1850 Census, Oakland County, Highland Township, Michigan: Brown, Lewis 40*M*W*Farmer*NY Brown, Almaira 33*F*W*NY Brown, Mary 17*F*W*NY Brown, Henry 15*M*W*NY Brown, James 13*M*W*NY Brown, Martin 12*M*W*NY Brown, Caroline 10*F*W*NY Brown, Jane 07*F*W*NY Brown, Lucy 06*F*W*NY Brown, Sylvester 04*M*W*MI Brown, Henrich 02*F*W*MI --------------------------------- From Jackie Hanna and the New York Gazateer: Under Jefferson County, it has the following: "LeRay was formed from Brownville, Feb 17, 1806 ...
