Note:   Obituary MARTIN KRALING A long life's journey came to an end last Thursday afternoon, Feb. 13, when Martin Kraling departed this life. He was the last living member of his family and said to be the last of the pioneer settlers of Harmony Township. Martin Kraling was born Dec. 24, 1840, in Germany. In his early childhood, his father laid down his life for his country in the war with Poland, and young Martin was taken to a government institution where he received his religious and civil education and the foundation was laid for an honest and useful life. In 1886 he emigrated to America, coming first to Watertown, Wis. There he was united in marriage to Mary Steuber. About 6 years later they moved to Fillmore County and located at Big Spring. This union was blessed with eleven children, four girls and seven boys, one daughter and three sons preceding their father in death. After 37 years of married life Mr. Kraling was called upon to give up in death, his wife, the mother of his children. In 1902 he was married to Mrs, Henrietta Holtz. After 24 years this union also, was broken by Mrs. Kraling's death. Altho past 80 years of age he was still quite active but his son Emil brought him to spend the remainder of his days with his family in his home in Big Spring in order to better care for him. Here in enjoyed good health and being of a rugged constitution and ambitious nature he was never as well satisfied as when he could be active in some way and one who was not acquainted with the old gentleman could ever have guessed his great age, judging by his alertness and activity. He might have reached a still greater age, but for an injury, a fracture of the thigh bone near his hip, which he received from a fall, on Monday, Feb. 10. Wednesday, his suffering became so great that it was thought best to remove him to Cresco Hospital. On the afternoon of the following day, Feb. 13, death was sent to relieve him and to fulfill a longing to go home, that he felt keenly and had often expressed in his later years. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Geo. Reihl and Mrs. A. Zimmerman, both of Zion City, Ill; Mrs. W. H. Rieck of Yankton, S. Dak., and by four sons, Lewis, of Florence, S. Dak, John of Watertown, S. Dak., Albert of Stirum, N. Dak., and Emil of Big Spring; also 33 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. On the past Christmas, he entered upon the 90th year of his life, thus exceeding by ten years the limit Scriptures state in Psalm 90: "The days of our years are three score and ten and if by reason of strength they be four score, yet is their strength labor and sorrow."
