Note: When he was a young man in his late teens or early twenties, Uncle Albert went out west and guided for wealthy easterners. He played poker around the campfire in the evening and won a gold pocket watch one time which he brought back. My father bought the watch and that became his first engagement gift to my mother. (I now own the watch.) He was either given or bought the half section directly across the road from our half section farm. Originally there was an additional cow barn, granary and horse barn on it, but when Albert and Annie came to live there a modern craftsman home was built. His mother Mary Spies Zippel had kept all the farm land in her name including our farm. So the deal whatever it was was between her and her son. There was a deed with a price on it of around $6000 I think. There had never been any satisfaction of that deed filed; but Albert and Annie said they had made payments that had not been recorded and they were given a clear deed by their brothers. Uncle Albert was another gentle giant of a Zippel man. Around 6" 4" tall, his words were so soft spoken and well considered, that even a slightly stern word or a louder laugh made us all look up. An excellent horseman he also had logged with his grandfather and father, could build a house, served as a veterinarian, and did just about everything that came along .
