Notes
a. Note:   There was a family legend that the Spies family had been winemakers and the Wilhelm family storekeepers and cooks. They're all supposed to have come from the Rhine country.. probably Rhinehessen. This area is all little tributaries of the Rhine and is dotted with villages and vineyards. The Spies Winery was located in a village called Maikammer during the 1800s. It is now one of the best preserved old wineries in the area. The wine cellar has been made into a museum and is now a city owned estate. The city has built a shopping center around this and it is now a tourist attraction. In this same town, there was a good-sized store owned by a K. Wilhelm. This town is in a triangle whose parameters are bounded by Manheim, Saarbrucken and Mainz. The closest town of any sort is Landau which is a present day name and an historical name both. Darmstadt is on the other side of Rhine just a few miles east of Mainz. Cheryl Morales has Justus Spies coming from Darmstadt, Hesse. This may be because the Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt had Darmstadt as the seat of civil government at the time and so someone listed it as the home city.
