Notes
a. Note:   "Adventure and unemployment prompted John McGillivray of Inverness, Scotland, to come to the United States in 1858. He lived in Ohio, and when the Civil War broke out, he inlisted in the Heavy Artillery and was based at Beverly, West Virginia, where he met and married Mary Elizabeth Rummel. Later they moved to Indiana in 1873. 'Go west, young man, go west' lured them to Grant Co. in 1887. Four of their five children came with them: Kate, Edward, Owen, and Guy. Flora, remained in Indiana. Their daughter, Barbara, was born in Grant Co.." Source: Grant Co. Kansas, page 378. "John McGillivray relates a pioneering spirit in a letter from Grant county to his wife, Mary (Rummell) in Spencerville, Indiana: March 2, 1887 - I have been living on the claim one week tonight and it has been very lonesome by myself. There are ten or twelve houses in sight. I took some flour to a neighbor yesterday about a mile from here to get some bread baked. I saw a wolf (coyote) as he went past my shanty. He was as large as a good-sized dog. In looking at your letter I see you got your carpet. I just laughed to think of a carpet on a dirt floor in a dugout! You don't have to split kindling here. All one has to do is go out on the prairie and gather an arm full of cowturds. Our water is good here. Our well is 95 feet deep. Take good care of yourselves coming out here. I am counting the days."
