Notes
a. Note:   One time when Charles' sister, Caroline, was chopping kindling, as a young girl, Charles told her that he could put his hand on the chopping block and jerk it away before she could hit it. He almost did, but not quite, and she cut one of his fingers nearly off (never underestimate a Holzhauser woman or girl...LOL). He ran to the house with the finger dangling from a small piece of skin. Their father put it back where it belonged and wrapped it with his chaw of tobacco and bandaged it. Charles had the finger for the rest of his life. Charles and Louisa settled down on the Holzhauser Ranch in Scott Valley, that he purchased from his father, Fritz. Was a rancher & farmer. Copied here is a letter he wrote to his cousin Emma, dated December 27, 1873, Scott Valley: Dear Cousin Emma, It is with pleasure that I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines. Your kind letter arrived the 24th. I congratulated to received a letter from you. You have made rapid progress in the last few years. I hope you will continue on and prepare yourself for your future welfare and happiness. I know that your father will do all he can for you to prepare you for your future life and so you must try and be studious. I am glad to hear that you are well and your Father and Mother and Brothers also. I am well this fall. My sisters have been down to Santa Clara to school all summer. I went down the first of December and got them home intending to send them to the Ashland Academy. My Father arrived home from Germany with 3 of our cousins or 3 of his nieces some two weeks ago. He has enjoyed health very much while he was on his journey. Tell your Father if he wants to make a journey to Europe next spring, that he could have a chance to go with Father. He intends to make another journey next spring, intending to start the first or middle of April and intends to be back by harvest. Well, Emma, I will close hoping to hear from you soon again. I want to write a few lines to your Father. Goodbye, Emma I remain yours very truly, Cousin Chas. H. Holzhauser Note on above letter: The 3 cousins/nieces were my great grandad Holzhauser's 3 sisters: Augusta, Elisa & Christina. And from the way it sounds, Emma's father was a brother to Christian & Frederick Holzhauser.
