Notes
a. Note:   N1270 The 1850 census of Staunton Township, District No. 104, Miami County, Ohio lists 282,282 Fielding Dye, 25, M, Farmer, Ohio Catherine Dye, 20, F, Ohio Almeade J. Dye, 2, F, Ohio Elizabeth Dye, 5/12, F, Ohio James Abbott, 23, M. Farmer, Ohio James Abbott is probably Catherine’s brother. In the 1860 census, we find Fielding and his family in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana. The listing is as follows: 201, 201 Fielding Dye 35 M farmer 1200 (value of real estate) 150 (value of personal estate) Ohio Catherine Dye 27 F Ohio Almetta J. 12 F * Ohio Elizabeth 9 F * Ohio William H. 7 M * Ohio Sarah M. 5 F Indiana Mary M. 3 F Indiana Louiza E. 9/12 F Indiana * = Attended school within the year. There is another Fielding Dye listed in the 1850 census, and in the same township. His age is 42, his wife’s name Sarah (41), children Jeles (20), Lydia (18), Horatio (16), Cornelius (14), Mary (12), Maria (11), Christian (9), and Westley (4). Other sources indicate that his full name was Fielding Lowery Dye, and his wife’s maiden name was LeFevre. We also know his exact birth date: 4 January 1808. Some sources have confused the older Fielding with the younger, and list the older as being married to Catherine, which is incorrect. The “Fielding problem” is confounded by the existence of at least two other Fielding Dyes: one in West Virginia born about 1835, and one who was the nephew of Fielding L., the son of his brother Jacob, who was born in 1832 and apparently died as a child. It is clear that Fielding was a popular family name with the Dyes, and that all of these people are undoubtedly related in some way. In 1870, Fielding (48) and his second wife Rebecca (24) are in Ohio Township, Darke County, Ohio, with his youngest son Joseph (9) (probably by his first wife Catherine). In 1880 Fielding (57) and Rebecca are back in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana with Joseph (18) and a daugher Elizabeth Burris (6). I believe Elizabeth must be adopted. I have concluded that it is highly probable that Fielding L. was the father of Fielding, and that Fielding was more likely born about 1828. This is borne out by a web site which lists “Almeade J.” Dye as the daughter of Fielding and Catherine, and granddaughter of Fielding and Sarah.
