Notes
a. Note:   N1880 John’s birth and death dates from the New Carlisle Cemetery records. John apparently emigrated to the U. S. prior to 1834 based on the ages and birthplace of his children. John and Elizabeth’s names, approximate birth dates, and names and approximate birth dates of children, are from the 1860 census of Bethel Township, Clark County, Ohio. It lists them as follows: John Ellis (50, farmer, b. England), Elizabeth (46), Mary Ann (25, seamstress), Benjamin (23, farmer), William (21, farmer), Suzannah (18, seamstress), Jane (15), Elizabeth (12), John (10), Ellen (8), and Charles (6). All except for John senior were born in Pennsylvania. The five younger children had all attended school within the last year. More precise dates and names are from Ancestry’s One World Tree and I do not know how accurate they are, as I do not know the ultimate source. Using the above information, I believe I found John and his family in Ebensburg, Cambria County, Pennsylvania in 1840. The record looks pretty close, but there is one extra child, and the wife’s age is off. The latter is possibly because it would be quite easy to check the wrong column on the form. We have two males under five (Benjamin and William), one between five and ten (unknown), and one between thirty and forty (John). There is one female between five and ten (Mary Ann), and one between thirty and forty (Elizabeth, with error?). I have been utterly unable to find the Ellises in any index of the 1850 census. In the 1870 census of New Carlisle (Bethel Township, Clark County, p. 19), we have John (60, farmer, born in Yorkshire, England; real estate valued at $8,000, personal estate $10,000); Elizabeth (55); Mary (34); John (20); Ella (17); Edwin (?nearly illegible)(15); and Susan Greer (85). I strongly suspect that Susan is Elizabeth’s mother. All except John Senior were born in Pennsylvania. In this census, Elizabeth is literate. Either she learned to read and write in the interim, or one census or the other is in error. In 1880, John (70, retired), Elisabeth (66), and Charly (25) were living in New Carlisle. I identify Charly with Edwin of the earlier census. I have been unable to find them in the 1850 Pennsylvania census. They should have been there until at least 1854 because Charles (or Edwin?) was born there. A record on FamilySearch has a John Ellis (parents Benjamin Ellis and Faith Oldroyd) christened 29 Oct 1808 in Mirfield, Yorkshire. This is close to his approximate birth date as given by the 1860 census (1809 or1810), but earlier than the birth date given by the New Carlisle census records. However, the father's name Benjamin is suggestive, since John named his oldest son Benjamin. However, the date discrepancy makes it unlikely that Benjamin and Faith were the parents of John. The source of this information is a Jack Ellis from Bristol. Jack knows nothing of a death date or marriage date and does not indicate that John emigrated. According to this record, Benjamin and Faith were married 26 Dec 1808, two months after John was born. One World Tree lists them as John’s parents, but I cannot vouch for this for certain. FamilySearch has a marriage record of John Ellis and Elizabeth (no last name given) about 1823 in Norristown, Montgomery, Pennsylvania. The date is clearly wrong (too early, assuming the ages in the 1860 census are approximately correct), but this could be our couple if the date has been transposed from 1832. There are two other marriage records for John and Elizabeth with last names given for Elizabeth. Both of these dates are also too early.
