Notes
a. Note:   N2412 Mary was a tiny woman, but a very strong one. At age 18 she married a man almost twice her age; clearly it was an arranged marriage. She was a wonderful woman, beloved by her children and grandchildren. She was extremely talented in the household arts; could knit and crochet without a pattern, make quilts, and cook, mostly without recipes. We still have some of the things that she made, including a very pretty light quilt. She must have had very bad teeth, because we never see her in a picture smiling with her teeth exposed. In her old age, she wore false teeth, which fit very badly and gave her lots of trouble. She worked as a midwife, and after her husband’s injury which kept him from working, she must have been the main support of the family, although a couple of her older daughters worked as teachers and must have helped by contributing to the family. In her old age she came west and lived with various of her grown children, and lived for awhile with her brother Frank, until after he died, when because of a bad heart she was no longer able to care for herself.
