Notes
a. Note:   N6 Frances, like all the Ginsbach women, was a strong, capable person, and a survivor. Her first husband, by whom she had all of her children, was a wife-beater, and eventually, in spite of the ostracism, she divorced him. For some years while the children were young she worked as a cook in a logging camp. Eventually she met and married John Batcheldor, a railroad train engineer, with whom she had many happy years. His son Charles was like another son to her. I remember John as a very nice, very bald man, and Charles as a young fellow with jug-handle ears. I met John at Ray’s funeral, and he told me that it should have been his funeral, not Ray’s. He had had heart trouble for years, and according to Marilynn, Frances had recourse to all kinds of fortune tellers and necromancers in order to get John to live longer. He did, whether it was the fortune tellers’ actions or not. He outlived Ray by 18 years. Frances was a sweet woman; the last time we saw her was at the nursing home in Centralia not long before she died. She had all of her faculties but was extremely reluctant to have her picture taken with us—I suppose, because she was so old and old looking.
