Notes
a. Note:   N352 The exact birth and death dates for John and Hannah are from the New Carlisle Cemetery records. I believe that I have found John and Hannah in the 1840 census of Crawford County, Oil Creek Township, Pennsylvania. I was led to look at Pennsylvania in 1840 since the 1860 census says that their oldest son, Lewis, was born in Pennsylvania. The only John Day that fit was located in this county and township. The household contained one boy under 5 (Lewis), a man between 20 and 30 (John), a man between 60 and 70 (maybe John’s or Hannah’s father), and a woman between 15 and 20 (Hannah). The age of Hannah does not coincide exactly, but then their ages are inconsistent from census to census. With this information, I searched for Crawford County Days in the 1830 census and found Charles, the right age to be the man living with John in 1840, with a son the right age to be John. I am assuming for the moment that Charles is John’s father. I do not have incontrovertible proof, but it seems entirely likely. The information below is from the 1850 census of New Carlisle, Ohio. Listed are John (age 45), Hannah (43), Lewis (13), Eliza J. (9), Wm. (5), John W. (3), and Babe (1/12). Value of real estate--$450.00. In the 1860 census of Bethel Township, Clark County, Ohio we find the following: 559, 572 John Day 45 M Hack Driver 800 493 Penn (Unable to read or write) Hannah Day 47 F Penn William Day 16 M O John W 13 M O Elizabeth 8 F All three children are listed as having attended school within the year. Lewis and Eliza have probably grown up and left home (indeed, I later found Lewis and his wife in the 1860 census). It is possible that Elizabeth is the same as the baby girl who was unnamed in 1850, though there is a two year discrepancy in her age. (But then it is not clear to me that they kept very good track of ages. John was certainly not 45 in both 1850 and 1860, and Hannah cannot have aged only four years in the ten between censuses!) If Elizabeth is not the same as the unnamed baby girl, then the girl must have died in the interim. In the 1870 census, John and family lived in Bethel Township, Clark County, Ohio. The record is faded and nearly illegible; as nearly as I can make it out, it lists John (55?, mail carrier Springfield to Carlisle), Hannah (55?, keeps house), William (26, grocer), Wesley (23, day laborer), Elizabeth (18, helps mother), and George (10?, attends school). From the 1880 census discussed below, which lists George as a grandson, I have inferred that George is the son of Lewis Day. William’s son George was about ten years younger. The 1880 census of New Carlise is very puzzling. It lists John (61, mail carrier); wife Hanna (58); son Wisley (35, laborer); grandson George (19); and niece Lueasy (30). I surmise that George is the son of Lewis Day and I have entered him there. I believe that Lueasy must be the daughter of John’s brother Horace.
