Title: Correspondence Author: Frederick V. (Valentinus Fridericus) Heberlein Publication: Letter dated 11 May 1875 to Louis Heberlein Text: The following is an English translation of a letter written by Frederick V. Heberlein (Valentinus Fridericus) to his cousin Louis Heberlein in 1875. Rudds Mills, May 11th '75 Dear Cousin Louis Heberlein, When I recently looked after my farm near Briggsville, I also spent a few days at brother Jacob's and had the unexpected pleasure to read your letter. I was very happy to hear that you and your brothers and sisters are fine and doing well. Since I don't know how much or how little Jacob told you about me, perhaps you heard that we lived together in Washington County, Wisconsin until I sold my farm for a variety of reasons and moved with my family, consisting of my wife and three children, to Kilbourn City, a small town on the Wisconsin River and the Milwaukee and La Crosse R.R. (I had married Louise Rothe in 1851, she was originally from Lippe Dettmold). I lived there and made a pretty good living for about seven years, when we had a fire and lost everything since I was not insured. All we were able to save were our horses and the clothes we were wearing at the time. The town's people insisted that I should rebuild and that they would help, which some of them did. But it was unavoidable to go into debt. The following Spring, I traded everything for a 160 acre farm (60 of which under cultivation). This went quite well, but unfortunately I was not able to get rid of my debts as quickly as I would have liked. So I went to work with my whole family to the Chicago Northwestern R.R. which was being built at that time. This was in the vicinity of Baraboo and Reedsborough, up to the tunnel. Also we took in borders. After further trials and tribulations, we wound up near Camp Douglas on the La Crosse R.R. some 60 miles west of Kilbourn. Next Spring we hope to go back to the farm. Currently we all live together. My oldest son Wilhelm, 22, and the three oldest girls, Friedricke, Bertha, and Mathilde, help their mother in the guesthouse. They sure have their hands full because we normally put up 40 men, not counting transients. Then we have our youngest girl, Ella, 6, and we lost our kind Carl some two years ago. He would be 11. So all together we have six living children. Thank God, all in good health, as are my wife and I. Enough for now. (No signature) |
