Her mother died when she was only fifteen years old, leaving her the care of the family. She was married to Robert Pierce, February 12, 1868. There was born to this union nine children, two of whom died in infancy. Soon after their marriage in Wales they came to the United States, settling in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where they lived four years. Later they moved to Illinois, then to Iowa for a short time, coming to Phelps county in 1894, where Mr. Pierce took up a homestead a few miles south of Loomis. The family took an active interest in the community life, especially the religious life. Mr. Pierce was instrumental in organizing and building a church near his home. Mrs. Pierce took a special interest in his work. She was a women of broad sympaties and was ever ready to help the needy, the sick and sorrowing. She and her husband were constructive factors in the community life. The lived to make the world a better place in which to live. They know the privations of those early days, but Mrs. Pierce bore her part cheerfully and nobly. She moved to Holdrege in 1907 and has lived here since. She had her share of sorrow especially in her later years which are bore with true Christian fortitude. Her daughter Martha died in October, 1918, followed the next year by the death of her husband. Anna died in June 1920, and William in April 1921. Her health had been failing rapidly the last few months. She passed away at the home of her son early Friday morning, November 16th. Three children are left to mourn her loss, Mrs. Wilmot of Hudson, Colo., Mrs. Cannor of Loveland, Colo., and John who lives on the old homestead south of Loomis. Several grandchildren will miss her also. She was a true Christian women and lived her religion daily. Her friends were many. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian chruch Sunday afternoon and were largely attended. They were in charge of Rev. J. W. Douglass, her pastor. ++++++++++++++++++++ Mrs. Sarah Edwards Pierce for nearly forty years a resident of Phelps Co., widow of Rev Robert Pierce, and mother of the late Rev. W. R. Pierce, died at the home of her son John, near Loomis on Nov. 16, 1923 at the ripe age of 79 years, 2 months, 18 days.
