John Newton Roberts in a letter to Larry Redman tells that it was necessary for state legislators to be guarded during the turbulent times in Missouri before and during the Civil War. Missouri was a border state and there were many people that were Southern-sympathizers in Missouri. His daughter, Margaret Downey DeLong and her family lived next door to Samuel and his family in Harrison Co. in 1870. IOOF the twin of masonry in charity and benevolence is represented in Bethany by Miriam Lodge #129, chartered in 1850, Samuel Downey was one of the early members. He was a man of comfortable means. After Martha died, Samuel lived with his daughter, Margaret and her family. In his will his grandson , John Newton Roberts was one of his beneficiaries. He is buried in Downey Cemetery, a small cemetery on the farm of Ervin and Martha Roberts Percell, in Harrison Co., Missouri.
