WWII destroyed a ll p ass enge rs lists in Bremen and some Hamburg records have been recons tr uc te d. Bu t, with Wolfelsdorf being east of Dresden, I have no id ea wh at po rt they w ould have sailed from Prussia to USA. I have comb ed the bo oks, G erma ns to America, which are in many USA libraries. The story that we heard was that Isidor Weigel came home from t he mi li ta ry having been wounded. In this intervening time, another bro th er h ad g ro wn up and was doing the farming. With the farm not ab le to su ppo rt the ent ire family and older children, Isidor made the dec isi on to emig rate. (T ry not to think of the farms we have in the US A; a fa rm over t he re c ou ld be a plot of land and a cow, hog or two .) Josephi ne was w or ki ng out of the home too. This is where our hand-m e-down stor ies diff er s lightly. After being with child twice by the s on in the hous ehold whe re s he worked, and not being able to alter her s ituation, her f amily s cr ap ed together the means to get her away, th us emigrating to IL . John and Josephine Weigel Ulfers married April 2,1872 so obviously J os ep hi ne was in IL prior to that date. Her brother, Isidor Weigel m ar ri ed O ct 7, 1872 so again he was in IL prior to that date. Did they e mig ra te tog ether? With Wilhelm (William) born Oct 7 1868 in Wolfelsdor f, t he re is a l ong time between Oct 1868 and April 1872, 3 1/2 yea rs th at I c an not accou nt for Isidor's and Josephine's location of resi de nc e. I wi ll have to te ll you that I have ordered 1870 US Census mic rof ilm and lite rally combed p age by page every resident in Peoria, Taze wel l, McLean, Woo dford and Livin gston Counties, IL for Josephine and Is id or Weigel. I d id not find the m! !! This is still not fullproof th at th ey were not ther e; census take rs were notorious for mistakes! N ot only t hat, but sometim es entire townsh ips or parts of townships a re missin g. We have one thi ng going for us; t he 1930 US Census shou ld be made ava ilable to us SOO N. Have not read a da te for this yet. Tha nk heavens Jose phine had a lo ng life and let's hope t he 1930 census h as a format aski ng for date of em igration. Tell me to hush; see how I ramble! Susan Ulfers Campbell Notes from Susan Ulfers Campell: There is also a photo that Mary Snider has written great gr an dm a, no na me written. This may be step-great grandma since I have re sea rch ed the Ca tholic Church records (had them translated) in Wolfelsdo rf a nd f ound th at great-grandma died and great grandfather remarried a nd h ad mo re childre n!!!!! Josephine's Mother Missfiz: I will copy these three photographs for you. Wh en I w as in B oo ne, IA (3-4 yrs. ago), I also took photo of Wm. Ulfers n ee Tobe ck gra ve st one and someone had put a flower on it. The flower w as si lk and ve ry fade d, but I find that interesting since he never marr ied a nd Theres ia and h is mother, Josephine Weigel Ulfers were his on ly heir s. Josephi ne sign ed a paper relinquishing her rights so that h is siste r, Theresia w ould inh erit. You asked me confirmation on the spelling of Theresia's nam e; on t he p a ss enger list of the ship "Hermann" it is spelled Theres ia with bro th er 's na me, Wilm. abbreviated. I also drove up to a little town near Center City, named Alme lu nd to a c em etery while I was in MN. It is interesting, Theresia h ad a h alf-broth er t hat farmed and is buried in Litchfield, MN named Jo hn Ulfer s. I am s ure b ack then that Theresia and John probably eith er visited e ach oth er or defi nitely wrote each other. Missfiz: My Dad remember his father talking about Theres ia a nd Wi ll ia m, in fact, my Dad visited them in Boone, IA when a li tt le bo y. T ha nk heavens for my Dad's memory, his name is also John Ul fer s. Theresia Weigel Tobeck signs the death certificate of Christ To be ck - Th er esia so will use that spelling although her obit spells it T her esa.
