Note: The line from the immigrant John Tapley to this point cannot wholly be proved, as the records are meager. Genealogy of the Tapley Family, pp. 7-8 First mentioned as resident of Portsmouth, NH, where his first five children were born, he then removed to Kittery, Maine. Birthdate unknown. Married Rebecca Briar of Portsmouth, March 19, 1726-27. She renewed the covenant at Portsmouth on October 20, 1728 and joined the Church on November 7, 1736. Boston Court Files, Vol 119, p. 51, case 12915: William Tapley brings suit against Capt. Andrew Robinson of the sloop "Squirrel" for ill treatment while on a fishing trip in the Gutt of Cansoe. Was a tailor in later life. William Tapley of Kittery, York County, gave general power of attorney to his "Trusty friend" William Pepperrell, Jr. of Kittery. Boston Court Files Vol 211, p. 61, case 26057. 27 January 1745, "Wm. Tapley of Kittery, Taylor, and his wife Rebekah, daughter of Wm. Bryor, deed to John Haley, Wm. Bryor's real estate" (York, Maine, Registry of Deeds). "18 Dec. 1745 gave 12 pounds to our brother, John Haley of Kittery." 6 May 1761 Lady Pepperell, widow of Gov. Wm. Pepperell gets execution against Wm. Tapley, Taylor, and Job Tapley, Corker and others for 1 pound, 18 shillings. Balance due on land - York (Maine) Registry. Wm. Tapley signed a deed of Richard Ffaye of Kittery to Roger Mitchell 1718-19. He was taxed in Portsmouth in 1727.
