a. Note:   Mansfield presents problems. He undoubtedly existed (from Charlestown records) but he does not appear in Harriet Sylvester Tapley's genealogy as a son of John. I put him here because it makes more sense given what we know of John and Gilbert. Vital Records of Salem record all of the children EXCEPT Mansfield, which presents some problems in interpreting what to do with him.
