NAME-BIRTH, MARRIAGE, DEATH AND BURIAL INFO:Oral records of Rosa D Spencer and Donald Mazeau, 1987;Margaret A Mazeau, 1989; Francis Mazeau of Milford CT, 1987;Marjorie Uschold ofRochester, NY, 1989 Family Calendar.NOTE:I originally had his deathdate as Nov 30th. I changed it to Nov 29th when I saw that's what Marjorie Uschold had. Camille worked for the City of New York both before and after serving with the Army Engineers as a colonel in World War I. In 1940 he joined the New Haven engineering firm of Westcott & Mapes. He retired in 1954. Camille designed both bridges spanning the Wepawaug between North Street and West River Street, the Kissing Bridge and the Maple Street Bridge. He also designed the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad bridge across the Housatonic River. He assisted in the design and construction of the New York City Subway System for the New York Board of Transit. Also, worked on the building of many New York City schools and for 13 years had been engineer in charge of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. BURIAL HEADSTONE: 13 Feb 2000: Was recently changed (in 1999). His rank had shown "Captain", which was incorrect. It was finally changed to that of "Colonel" according to Camille Symons(13 Feb 2000 Instant Message with Marshall Brown) and Diane Grace(04 Feb 2000 at 560 Huntington Rd Shelton CT in person to Marshall Brown, with Donald Mazeau present and in full agreement with Diane). Headstone is located in Milford Cemetery. SECOND SPOUSE AND HEADSTONE: 14 Feb 2000: Hi Marshall, The grave stone we were discussing was the Camille Mazeau's . When he died, he was married to a "Rene". This marriage caused many hard feelings. He was suckered into this "younger woman" . My mother in particular was very upset. It was obvious what she was after. Aunt Dorothy who lived at home, left and went to Kansas to live with some cousin. Grandpa only lived for a year after this marriage. "Rene" was considered dumb and stupid, (thats my mothers assessment). When he died Rene put "Captain" on his gravestone, because she thought that was higher than Colonel. According to my mother again, she said "leave it that way, that will fix him" You can verify this story with Camille. Now, back to reality, I felt it was important for our family history to correct this. Before my mother died she agreed. That's why the change. It took a long time for the cemetery people to finish the project. When the weather is nicer I will take a photo for our files. Also, she wanted to change the Jennie to the correct Jane marking. I know the site is full of Mazeau's. She was the absolute last one to be buried there. We probably should get the map of the site. That would have all the names and dates of the people in.it. I shall research it. We have a few days off next week from school. Lets hope for good weather. Check with your mother also regarding the grandpa wedding. She might have a different slant on it. You have been very busy since returning home. All the new photos. Let me know what your mom has to say . I know Camille and I have discussed it. This is getting to be a long letter. Chat with you soon, As ever Diane G. (Diane Grace) RESIDENCE: (8) Ettador Park, Milford CT RESEARCH: From Camille Symons, Sep 20 2002, to Marshall Brown via emal: It (the printing company where Fracis Mazeau and Horace Mazeau were both employed in 1942, according to the 1942 Milford City Directory) was known as the Wilson H. Lee Company. We saw quite a lot of Horace and family, as they lived about 4 houses down from the Spencer's on Noble Av. When we lived at Ettador Park, we'd see him there, as the Camille Mazeau's lived across the street. I sent you a copy of Grandpa Mazeau's article on becoming Colonel yesterday. I also started the process of selling the Huntington home on Thursday. They both are anxious to move ANYWHERE, as long as they're together. This makes it somewhat easier for the daughters, knowing our parents are facing the fact that they can't live there another winter. We're aiming for the home on Platt St., behind the house Gordon and I had on Pond Point Av. This offers a double room for couples, which not all nursing homes do. Camille NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: Title: "Mazeau Named Colonel After 7 Years' Study" Body: "Camille Mazeau. of Ettador Park, has just been commissioned by the President as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps, having completed the regulation Army seven years' study course and passed the required examinations. During the World War he served as major in France, and later was advanced to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. (New Paragraph) Col. Mazeau received his appointment at Fort Adams, N. Y. A long time resident of Milford, he holds the highest Reserve Corps post in this vicinity. He is well known as a civil engineer, and had been connected with many large construction projects." (A complete description of the source of this news article follows immediately below). RESEARCH: From Camille Symons, Sep 27 2002, to Marshall Brown via email, concerning the article "Mazeau Named Colonel After 7 Years' Study": Hi Marshall, The article appeared on page 2 just below the fold, in the 1st column. It's an 8 column paper. The paper is The Bridgeport Post, Vol. L111, No. 180. The date is Saturday, August 1, 1936. The weather for that day is fair and warmer, tonight and Sunday. President Roosevelt was in office. They should have said his name in the article. Shirley Temple is photographed on the front page (titled G-Men Rescue Her.) Seems that a 16 year old Nebraska farm boy was planning to extort $25,000 from her in some manner. Got caught. The headline on the right reads FASCISTS GATHERING FORCES FOR PIVOTAL MOVE ON MADRID. Grandpa ought to read that. He's forever blaming everything on the Fascists. Camille
