BIOGRAPHY: Date: 22-Nov-99 9:57:25 AM Pacific Standard Time From: Riphsy(Camille Mazeau-Symons dau of Donald Mazeau) To: Zythman Hi Marshall, Grapeshot, not musketball Grandpa (Donald Mazeau) said it was a big battle in terribly hot weather. James lay there for 3 days, with thousands of dead soldiers all around. The grapeshot killed the horse, and hit James' leg, but it didn't cripple him. However, he died at age 52, possibly this had shortened his life, according to Donald Mazeau on 2/24/2001 by telephone with Marshall Brown. BIRTH: Birthplace possibly New Orleans, Orleans, LA. This was reported in earlier notes source was Francis Mazeau, letter of 1989. It was later corrected by Marjorie Uschold to NYC, source unknown. CORRESPONDENCE: From: "Claudia J. Cox" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: Headstone Hunter Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 10:11:38 -0500 Found your request on Headstone Hunter for grave stone of James Young. Are you still looking for this and if so, do you have a clue which cemetery?? Let me know if I can Help, Claudia Cox in PA [email protected] CORRESPONDENCE: To: CLAUDIA J. FOX: Dear Claudia, (Fri Mar 23, 2001) Thank-you so much for responding to my request Unfortunately we do not know the name of the cemetery that our James W. YOUNG was buried in. We only know that he died in Bethlehem in about 1895. He was born in NYC in 1843, so his age at death would have been 52, give or take a year. We don't have his exact date of death or birth. We know that his wife, Jane Ann CAMPBELL, was born in Ireland in 1843, and died around the same time James died. We don't know the circumstances or cause of death of either. I include this much information on the chance that they are buried side-by-side. We also know that James and Jane bore seven children, born in the late 1860s and 1870s. James YOUNG was my grandfather's mother's father. My grandfather, Donald MAZEAU, was born March 24, 1906 and is still alive. Donald's mother was Jane Agnes Irene YOUNG. We have found James Young, then age 37, with his wife and children in the 1880 US Census in Westchester, PA. I have ordered copies of several articles from the Bethlehem Public Library, concerning Sheriff James Young of that time, on microfilmed records. Based on the titles of a series of news articles, it seems that at one time his reputation was called into question and there was an effort to remove him from his position as sheriff. I have not recieved these articles yet, but we are hoping they may reveal information about his whereabouts in his later years, which may lead us closer to his cemetery. My comments as appearing at headstone hunter about my James Young: Middle initial may be W. Wife's maiden name was Jane Ann Campbell. James' year of death is estimated. He was a sheriff in Westchester, PA. He was a union soldier in Civil War. Claudia please email me at my new email address: [email protected] Email sent to my [email protected] address is still being forwarded to my newer yahoo address, but that forwarding will end after one year. Sincerely, Marshall J. Brown Henderson, Nevada CORRESPONDENCE: Donald Mazeau by telephone 3/24/2001: The sons of James W. Young visited Donald Mazeau when he was age 7. He remembers all their names and stated that there were eleven children total: William, Benjamin, Levi, Robert (youngest brother, died at age 32 of tuberculosis in Westchester PA), James (the oldest, went to Ohio, was a superintendant of electric light company), Milton (was a builder, his own business, in PA, built town of Overbrook, built big business buildings in Philadelphia, many people knew of him.) Every single boy was a blonde with blue eyes, while all the girls were dark except Lizzy, who was blonde with blue eyes. When Jane Agnes Irene Young had her kids, the first four, two boys and two girls were all dark. Next was Francis with blonde hair and blue eyes. All the rest were dark. Horace was more dark reddish hair, with dark eyes like James Young. CORRESPONDENCE: From: "Claudia J. Cox" <[email protected]> | Block Address | Add to Address Book To: <[email protected]> Subject: James Young Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 21:48:52 -0500 Dear Marshall, Thanks for all the added information, I'll check in Bethlehem to see what I can find for you. The information that you have concerning his residence in Westchester, PA has me curious about a couple of things. Is that where he was the sheriff? If so, that is in a different county. Bethlehem is in Lehigh county or Northampton County, and West Chester, PA is in Montgomery or Chester Co. not a considerable distance between either place, probably about 60 miles, but the records would be held in the separate counties. Do you happen to know of any religious ties? Bethlehem has a large Moravian community, and they have excellent records. I'll get back to you in a few days and let you know what, if anything, that I have found for you. I live about 30 miles north of Bethlehem, but go down there often. By the way, I also am a Campbell, not the same line as you however, as my Campbell's were here in PA in 1798. Small world. Later....Claudia CORRESPONDENCE: Dear Claudia (3/24/2001) James (W.) Young was a Presbyterian, we are fairly sure. Today I telephoned his grandson, Donald Mazeau, age 95 born in 1906, and Donald confirms that his mother, a daughter of James Young, came from a Presbyterian background. Sorry about the confusion of locations. None of us can be absolutely certain where James was buried. We do know for sure that he was found in the 1880 Census in Westchester, Chester County, PA. We also know that his name appears in Bethlehem newspapers as a sheriff, but as sheriff of where we cannot be certain. Which Bethlehem -- we don't know but assume whichever one is closest to Westchester. We do know for sure that he died at age 52. Another small detail: James Young's wife Jane Ann Campbell was born in Ireland according to the above mentioned census record. Donald also said that James came from New Orleans, that his parents died of Yellow Fever at an early age, and that James was either born in New Orleans, or NYC, where his parents came from before they went to New Orleans. When James's parents died, he went to NYC to live with relatives, and when he was in his early twenties he went to Pennsylvania to operate some kind of a coal train for a mine for good pay then of $100 per month. He met his wife, Jane Ann Campbell, in Westchester. I don't know if any of this will help. CORRESPONDENCE: TO: Doris Christensen ( [email protected]) DATE: 7/22/02 I have located and researched my YOUNG ancestors of West Chester, Chester, Pennsylvania from the 1880 U.S. Census, Vol. 22, E.D. 43, SHEET 17, LINE 38, STATE: PENNSYLVANIA. I have discovered there are hundreds of other YOUNG families throughout Pennsylvania. Mine are James W. YOUNG and his wife Jane Ann CAMPBELL, of Ireland. According to this census record, there were only five children living with them at that time. According to my grandfather, there were 11 children, born in the 1860s-80s. We are not sure of the order of birth, although we've drawn some conclusions from the census record, and from our own family's knowledge. 1. James 2. William 3. Milton 4. Benjamin 5. Levi 6. Robert 7. Ida L. 8. Jane Agnes Irene, born 2 Dec 1871 9. Henrietta 10. Elizabeth S. 11. Anna M. From our grandfather, we also know that James W. YOUNG was born in about 1843 in New Orleans where his parents lived while James was a child, or in New York City, where his parents came from prior to their migration to New Orleans. (On the 1880 census, his record indicates he was then age 40). It was told to us that when James came of age, he left his parents in New Orleans and went to Pennsylvania seeking work because he knew of well-to-do relatives there, though we have no record of them. James W. became the sheriff at a time and place when better than 80% of the young and able-bodied migrants and transients were being put to work in the mines, specifically in the coal mines. James had served in the Civil War. Perhaps his military record helped him in eventually achieving the position of sheriff of Westchester. We have the grapeshot that was removed from his leg shortly after a civil-war battle, and have heard that he walked with a limp, thus presummably he rode horseback more often than walked. We know that James W. died in Bethlehem in about 1895. His age at death would have between 52 and 55, give or take a year. We don't have his exact date of his birth or death. We know from the 1870 Census that his wife, Jane Ann CAMPBELL, was born in Ireland in 1843, and died around the same time as James. We do not know the circumstances of death of either, or for that matter where either of them is buried. That little detail has been very elusive. We believe that they were buried in or near Westchester or Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, but have not yet found their graves or any record of their burial. James W.'s eldest son, James, went on to Ohio to became the superintendant of an electric light company. James W.'s youngest son, Robert, died at the age 32 of tuberculosis in Westchester PA. James W.'s son Milton became a renowned builder, and ran a highly successful business, building many early structures in the town of Overbrook, PA. Milton went on to build many large business buildings in Philadelphia, thus he became well known, respected, and wealthy. My grandfather, a son of Jane Agnes Irene YOUNG, recalls that in 1915 the sons of James W. came to visit their parents' relatives in New York City, including my grandfather's family. Grandfather recalls that every male child of James W. YOUNG was blonde with blue eyes, while the girls were all dark-haired except for "Lizzy" (Elizabeth S.), who was blonde with blue eyes.
