BURIAL:SLC Cemetary;Buried beside wife Kate Evelyn DALRYMPLE. CENSUS:1900;US;Willard Crescent,Fremont,Idaho;2 Jul 1900. BIOGRAPHY: Joseph Charles Manning was known as "A Big Liar" throughout the family, for the many stories and lies he told about his life, his date of birth, and the people he knew and the events he witnessed. Of parrticular interest to avid genealogists was that there usually seemed to be partial truths mixed in with his own fabrications, making for some serious detective work to sort out what was truth and what was probable fiction. For example, Joseph Charles made a statement claiming that he was in some war and that he received the purple heart, but that record could never be produced or verified or backed up by any witnesses. Perhaps he received a lesser medal. He also stated that he was 105 years old shortly before his death, however that did not agree with the date of birth he had given which would have placed him in his nineties. Elsie Manning-Black-King said that Joseph Charles Manning told her that his sister was the first woman in the United States (or the world) to graduate as a doctor, but also that there was no proof for that statement -- Elsie did not believe it. He was known for many other boasting statements that could not be verified, in fact some may have been disproven while he was still living. Even the persons he claimed to be his father and mother -- Charles Manning and Mary Read Anderson, are now in doubt. It leaves us, and you, the genealogist or researcher, with a challenge. We have never been able to determine exactly where he was born. Joseph Charles always claimed it was Springfield, Massachusettes, but the family could never produce a single shred of evidence supporting that claim, even after hiring a professional genealogist who produced a wide variety of well-researched records. The family (Maxine Jeanette Manning and her siblings) then asked the genealogist to go back and dig deeper. (She) did so, and produced further records, but none that could place the birth of Joseph Charles Manning in any Springfield family. The final cost was great for that time, about fifteen hundred dollars in the period of 1990 to 1993. The results were dissapointing even though the genealogist came highly recommended, and did produce many sources that basically disproved Joseph Charles Manning's birth in that area at that time. For further information on these results, see the full records of Maxine Jeanette Manning of Henderson, Nevada.
