Subj: Memories of Grandpa Brown Date: 4/5/99 1:04:17 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: [email protected] (William Webster Brown) To: [email protected] (Marshall Joel Brown) Hi Marshall: Grandfather William Brown did work as a carpenter and after a prostate operation he shunned his tools (as Grandma Brown put it) and took a job as an elevator operator in the 1st National Bank in New Haven. One of his friends from one of the Lodges he belonged to worked with me at U.S. Motors in Milford and told everyone my Grandfather was a Bank Director. He could cut meat as thin as paper to make it stretch around their large family and if you visited them on a Saturday nite you could expect baked beans and brown bread. He was secretary or treasurer in the Odd Fellows and also The Woodmen of the World and he was always typing reports (two finger method) and he did it real fast. He loved doing cross word puzzles They always rented, the last one (the only one I knew) was on Willard Street in the Westville section of New Haven. One of the last carpentry jobs he worked on was the housing units near the West Rock tunnel, built during the 2nd World War. He was real disgusted with them because of the way they were built such as wall studs being 24 inches on center instead of the usual 16 inches and other short cuts. Regarding our Grandpa Brown, yours and mine, he worked as a carpenter. When his health problems overtook him he the became an elevator operator. I remember visiting him, at the building where he worked. That's it for now, Mert BIRTH-PARENTS-DEATH: Family records; desc.
