Colonial records of Tax and Land shows him to be an Indian Scout for the Loyalist. After
further research, I found that this meant that he explored unknown Indian Territories for
the Virginia Company. To do this would have meant that he was some type of surveyor.
Tax records did not show him a land owner nor did it show that he was taxed on any personal property. The Virginia Company usually provided living Quarters for those that worked for them
and traveled. Therefore, there would have been no reason for him to be a land owner. Found in Indian Agents Of Antebellum Times: Joseph Martin was a noted Indian fighter in his earlier youth. He was appointed by Gov.
Benjamin Harrison as Indian Agent and in his instructions he said "much thereafter must
be left to your prudence and discretion in both which I have confidence.
