Notes
a. Note:   forebears & descendants, (Pelican, 1943), p. 5., (2) John Osburne Austin, Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island. Thomas Stafford sailed from Warwickshire, England to Plymouth, Mass. in 1626. He settled in Newport, R.I. in 1638. From there he moved to Providence and finally to Warwick, R.I. where he built the first watermill to grind corn for the residents of Plymouth. He was admitted freeman in 1638. Thomas Stafford died on 4 Nov 1677 in Warwick, Kent Co, RI. He was born abt. 1605 in Warwickshire, England. He was buried in Old Stafford Cemetary, Conabicut Pt, Warwick, Kent, RI. In John Osborne Austin's "Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island" it is stated that Thomas first landed at Plymouth, Mass. His occupation is listed as a miller and he is said to have built the first mill for grinding corn with water-power. On May 20, 1638 his name appears on a list of inhabitants of Newport, Rhode Island. In Gary Boyd Roberts's "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families" quotes two other genealogy works that Thomas and his brother John arrived in The New World in a vessel of their own. I have not been able to find any other trace of John. It also states the Thomas and John were the sons of Lord Stafford of Staffordshire. In 1655 he was recorded in "the Roule of ye Freeman of ye Colonie" as "Freeman of the Towne of Warwicke".
