  Kostas Alexakis, Biography
I am a businessman, a Democrat who trusts and believes in capitalism and democracy, and a man fully vested in the American dream. I was born on June 16, 1954, in Vasilakion, just south of Sparta, Greece. I grew up in this little community of 200 families, attending the one-room elementary school with 34 other kids before my family moved to Athens in 1964 and immigrating to the U.S. in August 1967. I spent my teenage years in Arlington, Virginia, where I attended both junior high and high school. I have a degree in electrical engineering from George Washington University. I moved to Baltimore in 1998 and have been active in both the social and political life of the city, having established several businesses in the city beginning in 1993.
Since May 21, 1995, I have been married to Laura Faibish, an attorney originally from Houston, Texas. We have one child, a daughter named Eleni.
Both Laura and I wish to contribute to the community by participating in the betterment of our community through the greatest exercise of democracy, politics. I believe in the intellectual capacity and work ethic of the people of Marylands 1st Congressional District and would like to participate in improving our quality of life. I can do this by working in Congress to clean up the bay once and for all, to help expand the educational opportunities by bringing in a graduate- and research-level university, and to attract technology-based good paying jobs to the district.
I am a fiscal conservative, a social moderate, and a registered Democrat, having voted for Democrats in the last several elections. I am a strong believer in the value of capitalism and democracy. I have spent my adult life in private business, building value through entrepreneurship in several industries, including real estate, service, and software.
I am a boater and a pilot and enjoy most outdoor sports, including skeet shooting. My wife, daughter, and I have spent significant parts of our summers on our boat, cruising the Chesapeake Bay, and enjoying the natural beauty, hospitality, and great food found in the wonderful coves that are particular to the Eastern Shore. And, we have been witnesses with first hand experience in the frustration of watching the decline in the quality of the waters and the damage to our native species as a direct result of the passive stewardship under Mr. Gilchrest.
I believe that getting involved in government can make a difference. Our democracy works, but often we need to remind career politicians not to get lost in bureaucracy and that their goal is to improve the lives of those they serve, not to compete for legislation-naming rights.
I am running for Congress because I believe that I have a valuable perspective, earned through hard work and broadened through education and experience, which can help improve the lives of the citizens of our district, the United States, and the world.
I am running for Congress because I believe that engaging in politics is a worthy Endeavour and that there is much that I can contribute from my grounding in real-life business problem solving experiences. Theoretical planning and practical implementation can only be properly reconciled through the measured eye of experience. While problems might appear complex, to those stuck in in-action, understanding the problem usually leads to solutions which afterwards appear elegant in their simplicity. And, solutions have no political party affiliation. Those who solve problems shouldnt care who came up with the solutions, they should care only whether the solutions can work.
I am running for Congress because I believe that although much effort has been spent on the Bay and much noise generated, the Bay continues to degrade.
I am running for Congress because I believe that we have been neglecting the education of our children and have abandoned the public school system. We are damaging our childrens future because we are, in large part, simply processing them, not educating them. The education of our children is the obligation of the government and there is no excuse for not making available to all our children a great education. Now is the time for new urgency-driven and goal-oriented thinking to solve this problem.
I am running for Congress because I am deeply concerned about the safety of our families as we find ourselves in this long battle with terrorists. This war without end must end now! We are smart enough, strong enough, compassionate enough, and rich enough to end it nowBring it on does not work! We surely must protect ourselves from those who are engaged against us; however, we must identify the core causes of this worldwide anti-Americanism and commit to destroy the oppressive social and political petri dishes in which these sentiments grow. We must make whatever effort is necessary to vest the Palestinian, the Saudi, the Yemeni, and others in the same success and optimism that their American-assimilated cousins, who live peacefully and productively among us, have found.
I am running for Congress to make a difference. With your help, we can, and we will, win and a) inject common sense and pragmatism in the discussion about the cost of government, healthcare, and retirement benefits for all our citizens; b) fix education; c) make this country and our citizens safe again; d) create opportunities for higher education and attract good-paying, high-technology jobs to our district.
