(27 Apr 1817 Charleston, South Carolina) 1836 he graduated from State Univ. at Athens, Georgia and from Yale Law School in 1838. He began his professional life at Wetumpka, Alabama, in the office of chancey. He also edite d the WETUMPKA ARGUS with his brother William L. Yancey. He returned to S. Carolina and was elected to the Legislature from the Edgefield District. Returning to Alabama he settled in Cherokee Co., and bought an estate on the Coosa River. 1855 He was elected by the Democrats to the Senate and made president of the body. 1856 He moved to Atlanta 1857 (about) He was appointed to the office of U.S. Minister to Argentine Republic under Pres . Buchanan 1859 He resigned and returned home. 1860 He was offered the mission to the court of France but he declined. He was nominated Sen ator but declined. 1861 He entered the army of Virginia, Capt. of Fulton Dragoons of Atlanta which was attache d to Cobb's Legion. He was elected Major and was virtually in command during the Peninsula r campaign. He was transferred to Georgia and assigned duties as Colonel under Gov. Brown . He then moved to Athens where he lived until he moved to Floyd Co., While here he was elect ed and served the people of Clark Co., for one term in the Legislature. He moved in 1881 to F loyd County. He died and was laid to rest in Myrtle Hill cemetery 24 Oct 1891, East Rome, Georgia. He was a trustee of the Univ. of Georgia for 28 years; President of the Agricultural Society.
