Notes
a. Note:   [Mark Bird Line 9-2005.FTW] [1a jm3490.FTW] transcribed by H. Byrne Montgomery 20 Feb 1853 Dear Ben, From what facts we had gleaned from Uncle Charles and James Gray and old aunts Harrison and - ---- -----, and a letter just received from old Major Charles Yancey, it is clear that he an d our father were own cousins. This is it----three brothers, Lewis Davis - Henry and Richar d Yancey emigrated from England. Lewis Davis Yancey settled on Little River, Louisa Co., Virginia - where he had sons - Archel ous, John, James, Tyre, Robert. James (our grandfather) in 1784 removed to Boston where he married Abigail Cudworth (then sty led "the Boston Beauty") whose mother was an Otis, and near relative of the celebrated Bosto n revolutionary Orator of that name. The Cudworth, her father was a near relative of the wel l known Dr. Ralph L. C. author of "That Intellective System" in England. It is supposed that our grandfather was in the army, which occupied Boston, early in the revo lution and there made acquaintance with Miss C. whose charms induced him to remove to Bosto n immediately after the Revolution. Robert, the brother of our grandfather was father Major Charles Yancey who inherited the plac e where Lewis Davis Yancey lived and died. Another of the three brothers, Henry, settled in Culpepper Co., and had 2 sons, Robert and Lay tan - who were Captains in Lee's celebrated Legion during the---- wars. Robert removed to Ha wkins Co., Kentucky. The third brother Richard settled in No. Caro. This accounts for the origin of the whole race in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and MS. By the by have you written to Mr. Dessan - sure - or any one else, to aid O'Veoli --- prepar ing a history and view of father's character as a lawyer? It is necessary to "urge the Judge" a little. I fear ---- has too much business to do it wel l --- Dessansure would have abstracted it better. Love to all. Yours, W.L. Yancey[Copy of Bird Hulings Original6-2004 hunsi2.FTW] transcribed by H.
