Notes
a. Note: frederick was a tinsmith in the 1880 census. it is believed that he worked for or with his maternal uncle, john schill. schill's son, richard the music teacher, was witness at his brother albert's naturalization. it is believed that frederick and his mother and siblings immigrated in july 1868, not 1877 as indicated on his death certificate. update--immediately after frederick's confirmation in apr 1868, which basically registered frederick for military service in an unstable, hostile germany, he, his mother and siblings now appear to have arrived on the hansa from bremen, on 6 jul 1868. . . .she was listed as 'widow of jac. schmiedenolf' and sons albert and frederick apparently masqueraded as 'julia' and 'wilhelmina' at age 16 and 14, probably to avoid emigration tangles over taking 2 military-aged males out of the country. albert's passport application about 1902 gives the same info. perhaps still fearing the long reach of bismarck, they were listed as schills in the 1870 census. frederick was listed as ernst. (thanks to judy baillargeon for these last 2 items) in 1881, frederick married rosine burmester, who was born in toronto while her family immigrated from schleswig-holstein, and was a descendant of dr. rudolf augustin vogel of erfurt and goettinger universities.
